The Japanese artist Itou Junji, is the same as John Carpenter in world of manga and, probably, one of the main Japanese authors working in the Body horror genre. In the summer of last year, I was surprised to learn that his manga will be the basis for the anime series and even more surprised when he found out that it would not be a separate story, but a whole eleven-volume collection Itou Junji Kessaku-shuu.
The other day I saw the first three episodes and, I confess, is more than impressed.
The stories of Juji Ito are not traditional horror stories, but rather a creepy and maximally crooked mix of Japanese folklore and urban legends, and as the genre is, the emphasis is not on the storyline and suspense, but on the frightening transformations that take place with the characters. Frightening images, a pinch of mysticism and maximum of expression and total hopelessness multiplied by an absolute hopelessness create an atmosphere of no similarity, whether it be fortune telling at a crossroads, a young man who sees dreams that last for years, a girl turned into a doll or a creepy model with sharp teeth - it's very hard to forget and does not pass like a terrible dream.
Knowing that the Japanese are rather shy and on some attractions they even get a changeable underwear, I can assume that this show will occupy the title of the most terrible animated series ever in the charts of the Land of the Rising Sun for many years.
However, speaking of the plot, I was a little squeamish - the garbage on the screen can fit into one short sentence in a retelling, but in a couple of 6 stories that I had already read (each series consists of two stories), the final twist should be compared with the stories of Philip K. Dick and also can provoke a stream of abusive language to the authors.
Definitely will look to the end, and strongly do not recommend to view especially impressionable viewers. Some scenes are brilliantly drawn, but easily traumatize the psyche.
