Do your like our planet? Maid-chan hopes you do! But typical human stupidity makes it look like humans will burn their only home – but this is a different topic.
Today Maid-chan will review Planet With, even though she does not know with what even now.
The anime is centered on Kuroi Sōya, who often looks rather dark and depressed.
Maybe it is because he lost his memories?
Yes, this is right, the poor boy does not remember anything from his past. He now lives with two people together in a small apartment, and those people are very definitely not human.
The first one is Kuroi Ginko, and while she shares the same family name as Soya, it is not her real one, as it is the case with Sora.
Ginko always dresses and behaves as a Maid, but that only seems to be out of her own fashion desires, not because she is one.
Maid-chan can understand that! There is nothing cuter than Maids!
Ginko has several supernatural abilities and acts as a translator between Soya and Sensei. And Sensei here means both a (cover?) name and teacher in the sense that he is the leader of the three. Oh, and he is also a cat.
But Maid-chan is not a specisist and will not comment on his outward appearance, especially not the oversized head.
Sensei only meows. This is strange, but it is even more strange what Ginko can translate out of it. She really has mysterious powers!
Sensei is the head of the Pacifist Faction of the Nebulans. This means there is another faction, but Maid-chan will ignore that for spoiler reasons.
Another important person for Soya is Takamagahara Nozomi.
Takamagahara Nozomi is one of those speaking names that some authors are so fond of. Takamagahara is a place in haven and Nozomi can mean desire.
The poor girl was surely bullied in Elementary School for her name!
Still Nozomi is not happy that Soya constantly forgets her name, even though she helped him so much! Only because she is the class rep, of course, not for any personal reason.
Story
A strange maid and a human-sized cat that try to prevent a youngster with memory loss from eating meat. That makes for a strange, but not interesting start. More interesting is the fact that Soya is commandeered by Sensei to fight in a sort of Mecha (Sensei himself who swallows Soya and transforms).
The really interesting part is that Soya is supposed to fight against human “Superheroes” who try to defend earth from an Invasion by aliens. It is an interesting twist of the usual story, an unusual anti-hero.
Or so Maid-chan though and had high hopes for this anime.
Unfortunately the story did not held up to that promising opening. The anti-hero story is quickly dissolved and after a certain back and forth (which showed some nice side stories and motivations, Maid-chan has to admit) everyone joins up to fight the real enemy.
yes, that are invasion vehicles
Author! You could have made so many funny encounters and failed attempts to catch the anti-hero and… other stuff with this setting! You failed! You failed BIG! Maid-chan is so frustrated!
It feels like the story of the Ugly Duckling, where it turns out to not be a swan but a vulture! And all this isn’t helped by the fact that everything feels hasted. Bah!
Conclusion
The anime could have been a very good if the setting had been used in a good way. Unfortunately that did not happen at all. What could have been a delicious meal turned out to be totally meat-free steak.
That is not to say that there isn’t anything delicious on the table. Some of the side stories of the side characters are really good. But what is a main story that fails to even compare to a side story?
Maid-chan had anticipated a solid 8 points for this, but after watching, she can only give disappointing 6/10 points for Planet With.
Maybe it would have been better for this to be destroyed...
