Love is sweet. That is especially true if the sweethearts are two sweet girls, right? Yes, Maid-chan knows what you guys want to see: Yuri! (For those who not know what that means, put very short it means “girls kissing”.)
Takayama Haruka and Sonoda Yū are best friends for years now. Coming to High School they are exited to find themselves in the same class again. Especially Haruka is very exited, Maid-chan thinks her brain is a bit too heavy on the excitement neurons.
On one of the first days, they wander into an unused classroom. The strange atmosphere makes them act in an unusual way… and they end up kissing!
Following that day it is mostly Haruka who wants to kiss again and again. Yū is more reserved, but sometimes suddenly starts the kissing herself. As you can imagine, there are also times of deep jealousy and hearts beating like a techno song.
Sakura Trick follows the two girls as they try to find their way around their new relationship. This is not made easier by the fact that they try to hide that they are more than just best friends.
And of course it turns out that they are not the only girl-girl couple in their class.
Minami Shizuku and Noda Kotone are not especially hiding the fact that they are lovers. Kotone, an energetic rich girl that likes to play pranks has even moved into reserved Shizuku’s house.
The relationships are sometimes a headache for Ikeno Kaede, the class representative. She enjoys teasing others but is not a bad girl (oh, the trope! Maid-chan thought), and as such has problems to decide how to handle those relationships around her. No problems with that has Iizuka Yuzu.
Yuzu seems totally oblivious for the love that is so thick in the air. That may be the reason why Kaede keeps her distance besides having her own deeper feelings for Yuzu. Or maybe it is just the interest about someone who is so oblivious, judge yourself.
A big problem turns up when Sonoda Mitsuki, Yū’s big sister and student council president, gets suspicious about her sister and Haruka.
She starts spying on those two and getting confused whenever they seem to be very close. Is Mitsuki just caring about her sister? Bloody Hell, no! Maid-chan thinks this is a good example of human stupidity. It is easy to see that Mitsuki falls in love with Haruka quite fast, but she does not get this for a long time.
But when Mitsuki realizes that she fell in love with the same girl as her sister, what will she do?
Maid-chan leaves that for you to find out yourself!
Conclusion
In Japan homosexual love is still something many people will not talk about. While there are plenty of examples in… “literature” (not literature), having an anime about the topic is not usual.
Sakura Trick is doing a good job showing that young people in love are just young people in love, whatever their sex may be.
Unfortunately (maybe because of the topic?) Sakura Trick is definitely a budget production. The character design is simple though cute enough. But the background is often very spartan.
The story is as predictable as you can expect from a slice of life, 4 panel manga playing mostly at school (as which Sakura Trick started).
Despite those shortcomings, Sakura Trick is still a worthy choice if your goal is to get a dose of lesbian cuteness, but not much more.
All in all Maid-chan, even when she wants to give the girls more love, can give Sakura Trick only an upper-end 6/10 on the totally objective Maid-chan scale.
