Today is the 214th anniversary of the birth of the great biologist, geologist, and naturalist Charles Darwin.
The work of Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel form the fundamental underpinning of the Modern Synthesis, the most powerful explanatory theory ever put forward in the biological sciences.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the Modern Synthesis, the observation of evolution and its causal mechanisms (i.e., phenotype arises from genotype) is the very foundation of modern biology.
There are so many other names that deserve mention in the development in the Modern Synthesis (Mayr, Wallace, de Vries, Huxley, and especially Dobzhansky to name a few) but it all begins with Darwin and Mendel.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Darwin. The world remembers you with gratitude.
