Just as in the arctic ocean where sea ice has been waning over the past 4 decades, the sea ice surrounding Antarctica is also on the decline. This is problematic as the Antarctic sea ice holds back the land ice. As this sea ice diminishes, this will allow for more land ice to move towards the sea, break off to be carried to warmer waters where it melts and contributes to increasing sea levels worldwide.
