Ethereum miners no longer have to worrry about antiminer E3 being out of date next month, as Bitmain released a firmware update yesterday
On Monday, the Beijing-based mining maker Bitmain announced that it had updated the antiminer e3 firmware. This means that the Ethereum miners can continue to use the device without fear of aging.
Bitmain referred to recent media reports that the deviced developed for Ethereum adn Ethereum Classic will no longer be functional as of next month.
The claims were based on the hash rate forecasts of the Altcoin pool operator 2Miners. In a blog post published at the end of February, 2Miners presented its “disappointing” conclusions. It was said that the Antminer E3 have already stopped ETC mining. When they made an inquiry to Bitmain, the Chinese company replied:
WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE, BUT WE HAVE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION FROM THE TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT. E3 MINER IS A 4G GRAPHIC CARD. E3 IS RELATED TO ETH ALGORITHM, AND GDR CAPACITY IS EXCEEDED TO THE UPPER LIMIT, SO E3 CANNOT CONTINUE TO MINING. THE MEANING IS THAT E3 CAN EXHAUST UNTIL JANUARY 2020 ...
New firmware update should help
It took Bitmain less than 3 weeks to fix the problem and update the Ethereum mining firmware. Although this update ensures that the Antminer E3 can continue to be used after April, it is not clear how long. The company said the final block height of the Antminer E3 is 11.4 million, which means that mining can continue until October 2020.
With the new firmware the problem of the growth of the files with directed acyclic graph (DAG) was solved, whereby the ability was restricted to ETH or ETC. This was achieved by expanding the use of DDR (Double Date Rate) memory, as more space is required to process DAG files.
