The Old Dog Explores: This Mouse Ain't No Rodent!

in antique •  7 years ago  (edited)

What I used to think looked silly now looks way COOL! It hasn't changed so I must have!

When I was a young man and I saw the Fiat 500 (nicknamed "Topolino", which translates in English as "Little Mouse") in European films I thought that they looked embarrassingly silly!

Who would ever be caught driving that little piece of........  I thought. After all, in North America we've got our mammoth, 8 cylinder, gas guzzling, cruise machines. Bigger is better and that little Topolino is nothing other than a ridiculous toy!

Fast forward almost 50 years and I wouldn't mind having one of them!

This guy pulled up in the piazza to display his prized little mouse just as we were enjoying dining by the Lake Como.

Was It The Ambiance That Made Me Desire That Car? I Wondered!

How did this car go from being a piece of ........ in my mind to being a highly desirable collectible? Was it just the atmosphere of a beautiful summer evening in the gorgeous village of Cernobbio?

This was our view from the outdoor restaurant as the sun set. This quaint village, about 15 minutes from our home is near both the city of Como and the famous town of Belaggio!

We got lucky to get these seats without a reservation on such a beautiful Friday evening!

In such as spectacular setting would just about anything look good?

The History of The Fiat 500. Lovingly Known as Topolino (Little Mouse)

  • It was produced by Fiat between 1936 and 1955 and was one of the smallest cars in the world.
  • It was powered by 569 cc straight side valve engine.
  • The engine has 13 bhp and a top speed of about 85 kph (53 mph)
  • It was highly successful in both pre and post war with nearly 520,000 sold!
  • This tiny 3.2 m long car has an amazing amount of interior space and exceptional all round vision!

Here Are A Few More Shots of This Little Beauty!

Can you see that the rag top has been folded back? Do you notice the suicide doors?

I love the leather bucket seats. To see some studio shots of this car check it here!

So what do you think? Was it just the ambiance that had me smitten with this little car! No! It's a cute, little, fun, funky car! I think that it's way cool and I'd love to buzz around the little towns in my area in it. I'd have a blast!

What About You?

  • Are there items that you used to think were sill that now seem cool?
  • Are there any antique cars that you'd like to drive?
  • Does the setting often change your perception of what is beautiful or cool?
  • What was your first ever car?

I hope that you enjoyed this article about a "Mouse That Ain't no Rodent!"

Haha maybe we'll try and rent one for the day!

that mouse is very very cute!
haha funny reading you two's comment here :)
gives me an idea what its like at home :)
a blast!

Thanks for the nice comment. Sorry I missed your last few posts and so glad you're doing well!

You're not alone. There must really be something to specific aesthetics that only begin to appeal to men after a certain age, because I know several dudes around 40-50 who now own Fiats. There's clubs for it on FB and everything.

Personally it's got to be futuristic and electric in my book. I'll have one foot in the future until the day they finally throw dirt on me.

Thanks for the image of one of your "dream cars". That one looks like it's got the wind resistance all figure out!

In fact, I wrote an article lamenting the fact that we're in 2017, yet cars don't look like it. I want to live in the scifi future, damnit.

86 Plymouth Horizon was my 1st car ever..........and my 2nd.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Do you still have affection for it?

I have no desire to ever see that car again, lol. I also had my 1st wreck in that car.

It never ceases to amaze me how 'Old Cars' that in their day people ridiculed today become iconic.

I'm more jealous of you eating by Lake Como tbh. :-D

It is amazing. Talk show host! Wow!

Meh, it's easy. We started out with a mobile phone, I kid you not. LOL

Lovely car will drive it any time!

It is lovely and probably quite a bit of fun.

I am sure

Ohh wimens and cars.... i guess is a red one ...!?!

I think that we need a pink one for you!

Red is just fine , no matter year , but the size is importnant !

Once Steem goes up to $10.00 I'll put one in a box and send it to you!

Ha ha when steem go to 100 i will buy me one red here :) One you cannot put in a box !

I would also love one of those, I think they were so bad that most of them rusted away, and now they are very scarce!! Short supply and high demand increased their value!

In South Africa do you have completely different cars? I know that you posted a lot about antique vehicles and many were unfamiliar to me.

Hi @kus-knee, I would say we have all the normal makes from Germany, France, Japan, USA, Britain, Italy and the more popular Korean and Chinese vehicles.

Lovely Car my friend, though it became lovely for you later! I have no interest in driving any antique cars as I am not a car lover, @nba05 is. For me a car is good enough to commute (any car that runs good and reliable). My First Car was Honda Civic 2002.

Yes, I was never a "piston head" as we used to call car lovers back in the day. I'm pretty well an A to B man myself but at my age I want it to have air conditioning!

"Piston Head", new word for me! Yes, a car should have an AC.

I like when you share photos thank you for this positive

Thanks for your visit!

you welcome sir

Wow!! I never knew people still drive those type of cars anymore.
I would love to drive a 1950's Dodge Challenger!!

Yes, a little spin in muscle car wouldn't be bad. When I was a teenager I got to cruise around Toronto in one of these:

Wow lucky!!!

La 500 è una macchina stupenda. Se ne vedono ancora in giro .. Quanti ricordi sulla 500 di mia madre! Gioielli che camminano....

I'm glad that you have sweet memories!

I have a 500!! Just the modern version ;) Thanks so much for sharing - loved this...

The new ones are nice and much sportier!

Great story! I loved the way you depicted the car. And Cernobbio looks like a beautiful pace. I think that this car looks much more attractive in this setting than it might driving down the freeway in the U.S lol!

Thanks. I wouldn't want to drive that thing on the freeway but a little cruise around town would be just about right!

Yes exactly! :)

Nice car. Great post. Thanks for shating. Upvoted and followed! Keep up the good work steemer!

Thanks so much!

Great article, as always! That view is incredible.
This mouse isn't as lucky haha :D

I remember those toons! Thanks!

You're quite welcome. I have family from that area and have to wonder why they ever moved to Brooklyn NY. Haha

Enjoyed it, though the old Volkswagen will always be my dreamcar #1 , its just a beauty

Yes, I still see some new generation hippies vacationing in those. My second car was a 1960's VW Bug and I loved that car!

It is suprising what you can cram inside its predisser, the bambino 500. 4 adults, 1 baby with all the bags of things they need. Cloth nappies, changing sheet etc, and overnight gear for two of the adults.
The new one looks flash to what I rember of the old bambino

The bambino! Awesome!

Love all the photos, thanks for sharing! Yeah, I've found as I've gotten older I like things When I was younger wouldn't have given a second glance or like you thought was silly. We change as we grow. We understand lots more also don't we ;)

Yes, hopefully we become old and wise!

Getting there.... I think...... slow learning curve here :)

So is it true that youth is wasted on the young? hahaha

Yeppers I suppose but man it sure was a good time! Memories are the spice of life.....

nice car bro!!!!!

Yes it is a cute little machine!

Beautiful scenery photos, and yeah, I guess of the car too. I must admit, the scenery looks much better than the car. Your photos make me want to come see your beautiful place on this earth.

Yes, I do need to invest in a camera though! I can only take a couple of pictures before my phone tells me that I'm out of memory!

Where you live looks great too! There is sure a lot of beauty in this world!

You are so absolutely correct. I need to start working harder on advocating young people to explore and travel this beautiful world and not get trapped into a life of the same place. I shall make it a new goal in my posts. Thanks for the inspiration

Nice posts @kus-knee

Hey @marius19 great to see you here!

How cool... The first car I ever owned (legally) was a 1946 Morris Minor that another kid and I each pitched in $5 for. We used to tie ourselves in, put on football gear and crash it into trees and roll it down hills!

Now I know why you've got joint problems! Yes I paid $50.00 for my first car and ended up pushing it off a cliff. Man was I ever an idiot!

I loved my second car. A 1960's Volkswagen Beetle that I bought for $200.00 That thing got me through college and was my pride and joy! I paid more for my kids baby stroller than for my first two cars put together! Way more!

That old Morris ran forever... we beat the crap out of it... rolled it down a hill Lord knows how many times and like a Timex- it just kept on ticking!

I'm in love with em cads so maybe something on that? haha Love this post tho, I like evening shots by the bay. Even the brick roads. Not exactly this but something like it. Just puts a smile on your face. Keep em' coming. Cheers!

#follow4follow

Do you have a Cad? They're BIG! Actually I've never even seen one here.

I'm in the asian region, sir! We hardly see any of the classics on this side of the region. But the influence from the western society certainly has got me curious on what was it actually like way back then. YES THEY ARE BIG! Cruisin' in one would never look as good. Haha

Thats a badass car, retro

Yes very retro and surely a lot of fun!

Do you have more cars like this? Hhahaha

Unfortunately I do not have a car, but I like rare cars. Machines from the past))

Hi @lil4a, there's nothing wrong with not having a car. I'd actually prefer it in many ways. If I lived in Zurich, for instance, I'd use their fabulous public transportation system!

Reminded me of this!

I love that scene! Are you really he?

nope. Its a mimic of Mr. Bean

And here I thought that I was communicating with royalty!

Who do you think will be the first REALLY famous person to start blogging here?

Not Sure. But he/she should be a big techie who believes in the platform and can also promote it on the same time.

Well Topolino has it's own style. I would never call it anything bad.
Hmm... 1963 Jaguar MK2?

Thanks for sharing)

Yes that would beckon me as well!

Wauw that view, i live in the Netherlands, everthing is so flat here.

As I once heard it said. "Why would you want mountains? They just get in the way of the view!"

Haha thats one way to look at it, but what if the Mountain is the view?!

What a pretty machine! I noticed that many very old cars acquire a special charm.

That's true!

the beautiful Topolino!!!! I love this car, it's elegant and the color is "magnifico"!

Who could not love this cute little car? I can imagine you taking your freaky houses for a drive in it!

It could be the perfect car for the Beneforti's family! Or maybe it's the perfect car to inspire a "freaky car" ^_^

very nice.. i love the fiat. Actually I was in Poland 15 years ago and there you also have this kind of car.. That time you had 10000+ driving everywhere.. I i go there nowadays they are almost gone..

Well, the technology had changed and there a really nice new tiny cars. I like the Smart car and rented it once for a vacation. I'd get one of those but there are 3 of us in our family. Thanks for your comment!

Found the wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_126 at that time you didn't look to it as special.. nowadays you think that time went by very fast.

These cars are so cute :)

I agree!

Lol! Looks like a combination of the front end of a chevy truck, and the rear of a bug! Some designer had a complex!

I knew that I'd seen that shape somewhere before. I think that you nailed it!

Hmm, as that Fiat came first, it seems I got it backwards. The Beetle, looks like the Fiat...

The need for this kind of car, and its functional objectives, was formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country's new road network. Hitler contracted Ferdinand Porsche in 1934 to design and build it.[12] Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalize the design.

(Wiki on the Bug.)

It still looks like a Chevy backed over a bug though...

i had never had a car. But if having more money, i would love some old car or bike, because it could bring back the memory, and also it will make you look funky.
anyway, that car look cute now, it look very well maintained.

Yes you're right!

Very nice post... Love the setting and the car!!!

Yes the setting was great!

It's not vintage but it's mine.

Very nice! My sister let me borrow hers once while I was visiting her in Canada. I had a blast!

It is a summer and winter toy for sure. It is a hard top and my hubby is sweet to take it off in the summer months.

Damn this car makes the ladys wet haha :D

Well if it rains and the rag top is down that's a given! hahaha

hahaha, nice one

Hi, man! Your car is really cool!

Good post Thanks for Sharing ^^ <3
