Lest we forget: Anzac Day service at dawn

Marks 103rd anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing in Gallipoli on 25 April

Wyndham residents are invited to the annual Anzac Day dawn service in Werribee, along with a range of other events to help remember those soldiers who have served in past and present conflicts around the world.

Thousands of people are expected to head to Station Place in Werribee to attend this year’s dawn service, which will mark the 103rd anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand forces landing in Gallipoli.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard, said Anzac Day was one of Australia’s most important national days.

“Like hundreds and thousands of other Australians, who will gather at memorials in cities, suburbs and towns all across Australia and the world, those attending the Werribee Anzac Day dawn service will come here to commemorate one of the most significant events in our national calendar,” Cr Maynard said.

“There are few words that adequately explain the importance of coming together on 25 April, however the Army itself comes about as close as you can when it says ‘time dims the memory of ordinary events, but not great events. In a nation’s history, great events—whether in peace or war—live in our memories regardless of time. They are deemed great not necessarily for what they achieved, nor for whether they were victories or successes. We do not celebrate victory or glorify war - we celebrate the human spirit - the spirit of ANZAC.’”

Cr Maynard said he was always impressed and heartened by how many people attend Werribee’s dawn service, especially younger generations, who keep the memories of our brave servicemen and women alive. “I’m sure this year will be no different and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Station Place cenotaph. This year’s service will be especially meaningful as it marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I,” he added.

On Monday, 23 April also head to the Plaza Library and research Australian WWI and WWII service personnel, with the help of experienced volunteers. Booking are required for this experience.

For the month of April local libraries will also be crocheting poppies to be donated to the 5,000 Poppies Project. Join in and help create the broach-sized poppies as a fitting tribute the ANZACs.
