I am a Hypocrite and my Sincere Apologies...

in apologies •  7 years ago

Last month I took a firm stance, that I now realize was foolish. I have always tried to be the champion of goodness, but as I get older and wiser I realize goodness is in the eye of the beholder. What bothers one person is usually a reflection of their own self inadequacies and troubles.

The stance that I held: upvote bots are bad. I took many occasions to use the platform as an opportunity to say how dangerous I felt upvote bots are, and to an extent I am wary of the future of a promotion only world. But after six months of building relationships and community and realizing that Steem is my new part to full time job - I have realized that this was a mistake to take such a firm stance. Now I can see that with good blogging and relationship building on the various steem platforms, it IS possible to get a healthy dose of steem - either by a single upvote, or by a small payout from many people whom you have networked with.. I have even seen a large chunk of Steem be awarded to someone for their very first post, and many times that is a Steemians greatest opportunity, and they may not even realize it.
This Steem can then be recycled into voting bots to provide even the poorest of users a great financial chance on this platform.

I have debated this with many old and new Steemians, minnow and dolphin and whale, and by and large I am alone in my foolhardy position that bots are destroying the system. As I have looked deeper into the issue, it has become clear that most witnesses have their own, or are heavily supporting an upvote service. Ultimately it is up to us what we want to do with our upvote, and as for right now, anyone that has a problem with it - well its just that, their own problem. Whether this is someone who self votes, or someone that only votes their friends, or someone who accepts money for a vote worth more than the money accepted, I suppose it really doesn't matter. As the majority of witnesses are in favor of bots, they are here to stay and probably will proliferate.

I am committed to this platform and I hope that everyone with whom I have debated can see that - but now I realize that me spending 5-10 hours a day on Steem and remaining a minnow for the rest of my time here is neither beneficial to myself or those that I wish to help in the future. I want to directly apologize to @purepinay for the debate we had some time ago. She is a great Steemian, and I hope that she can support many, many people and become a Steem leader of sorts.

My other reasons are a bit more selfish - I have become committed to producing videos daily for the platform, and although I may not always succeed in my mission, that is my goal. I am just one person with many commitments outside of Steem, and while this blog will probably take less then 30 minutes to author and publish, sometimes a video from start to finish will take 3-6 hours of scripting, filming, and editing - and when all is said and done - even with 1000+ followers it is not uncommon to make less than 10 cents for my efforts, as well as less then 10 people seeing my video that I worked so hard on.

I hope that you all can forgive me for being such a hypocrite and in exchange I will make you a promise: I vow to never use robots to upvote content that I have not poured my heart and soul into. I can not say it will always be 'good' content, because maybe some people will never enjoy what it is I produce, but I can say it will always be meaningful to me, and therefore meaningful to the most amazing blockchain in existence : Steem.

I thank you for reading and your time.

Well there's a saying, "if you cant beat them, join them" :D
I can still remember that debate between you and some of @purepinay's followers in one of her posts. At that time I was still very new to the platform, and I also found it hard to decide whether upvote bots are bad or not.
But two thumbs up for you bro, at least you tried to prove that you can contribute much to this community first before resorting to upvote bots or upvote buying.

But you aren't a hypocrite. You have principles and see the need to adjust your stance based on new information gained through experience. I'm also changing my views on Bots for similar reasons and as long as the whales are rewarding themselves with $100+ upvotes I'm not going to feel bad about doing the same with my puny $0.03.

Brother, it is really nice of you to be so honest and apologize. Although, you did no harm to anyone because everyone has their own opinion and belief...over time this may change as we get more information have accumulated experience. In your case, it was right to apologize because you had a debate with others, but it's wrong for you to maybe think that you are wrong because you have informed yourself at that time and that was your opinion to it. However, one thing that I can say is that there's no right and wrong. There's only less right and less wrong :)

Winny out...for now ;)

The fact you're adult enough to apologize and admit you were wrong tells a lot about your character. It's all in the process of growth, my friend.

You've learned the importance of community and worked your way to and through it.

You'll be find in the meantime!

Got my answer that are in my mind around 3 to 4 days.. Thanks mate @maneki-neko
1 Point is that we love steemit and also get good revenue with learning through it.....

Awesome post, brother @maneki-neko! This is such an interesting place with regard to ethics, friendship, the collective and the common good.

Nice post. Building a community is what will create the biggest reward since dealing with real people will always be the best investment. Doing the real hard work will be giving the biggest reward in the long run. There is no cheat the system but it takes real effort. But 100 people supporting each other and putting in real effort and you got an amazing tribe going.

Even if you get more money by working on a system what will you do with it? Investing in real quality content and other humans will be giving the best reward in the long run.

Instantly the moment when you produce quality content you play with the big guys. Since quality content is all that matters in the long run. And this platform works amazingly.

Easily 10X better than any other service out there. It takes at least a year on other platforms to start seeing amazing results. Here you can do it the first month if you invest solid work. Work that will pay off in the long run!

Here is my down and dirty stance on it.

Music, IRL, does not exist without capital powering it out the door. Money capital, time capital, relationship capital. The second two can and have always been able to be facilitated through sweat equity ... but that first one. Damn son, where would I be right now if the first Maserati record I played on had 100k dumped on it for promotion like even the scrubby "big rock" records get. Voting bots -are- the entire PR machine reduced to a number ... a number that effectively ups visibility, access, fanbase building. It's almost kinda brilliantly simple.

So, I botted the absolute hell out of my early posts. And any post that I think rules that nobody is paying attention to. By using steembottracker you can invest SBD you earned back into your own posts in the 20 minute window where you will earn back a disproportionate amount of it.

Profitable....that's another story entirely. The bots exist to make your content more visible. And make money. If they go profitable that is -entirely- your own due dillengence staying up till all hours of the night till steembottracker tells you a bot with high voting power has been greatly underbid this cycle. Even then ... I'd say breaking even is more than worth it.

The other thing to consider about bots.... last night as the market tanked I threw some more scraps of fiat into the steem ecosystem. I fully intend to bot with this, as any SBD i invest now will be paid out in seven days ... and given SBD is in the absolute toilet right now, I can't help but feel like I'm investing my SBD into an SBD reward in the future that will appreciate in value. And gaining some traction.

I sure as hell wouldn't have made the progress I've made so far without doing some serious research into how to semi-profitably work the bot system. Botting aint making anybody rich. It's exposure, exposure exposure.... and even then botting yourself into the trending front page of "music" is going to cost you $70 or $80 SBD and i can't see how that even makes sense. I was considering doing a post about this, saving up $100SBD and just blasting it to the top of everything as an experiment, but ... well ... that's alot of potentially negative visibility that's off brand for my music/synth/production content.

Don't forget about guaranteed profit bots also! @qurator runs @qustodian ... which once you are registed with qurator is a bot that will refund your SBD if the bot has been bid into unprofitability. It's not a huge upvote, but its a guaranteed positive investment. I'm not crazy excited about bots. But I am crazy excited about my content and have been working my ass off on it. Me investing my money into gaining visibility and followers is absolutely positively no different than the system I have come to know and "love".

the music industry

I am in a similar boat to you having been on the fence regarding the use of bots - leaning more toward being against using them.

I then started to notice that those who started around the same time as me are way ahead in terms of followers, reputation (oh, and income) yet this hasn't detracted from the quality of their posts - the key reason seemingly being their use of bots.

I also noticed that some key whales and witnesses support (indeed some have setup) bots.

So I am with you and have started to tinker with them. The Q now is how on earth to invest in them without a negative roi....?! The subject of another post...?

carry on guys

It’s hard for humans as they have a natural impulse to consistency but I like it that you are open for other opinions and have changed your mind. I still hate bots but who knows? Maybe my opinion will change as well some day.

I know the feeling of spending a lot of time in something and dont get rewarded for it. I Think its more frustrating that other people with really simple posts or sometimes only a picture get like 100 SBD while a video wich took several hours can give only 20 cents.
