The “Checkpoint Charlie” was one of the Berlin border crossings through the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1990. In Friedrichstrasse between Zimmerstrasse and Kochstrasse (at the subway station of the same name) it connected the Soviet with the American sector and thus the East Berlin district of Mitte the West Berlin district of Kreuzberg.
The checkpoint was established in August / September 1961 as a result of the building of the wall by the Western Allies to continue to allow members of their military personnel to cross the sector border, registering and instructing them.
Controls of all other visitors to East Berlin, like everywhere on the western side, did not take place at Checkpoint Charlie.
