In my tradition, it is a commandment, as in Jesus' reply to the rich young man who asked Him what the greatest commandment is. His reply, "The first is this: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul. The second is: you shall love your neighbor AS YOURSELF." Which means self-love comes in second.
