It is a funny thing. Some things are eaten by many families in Greece, which are rarely eaten here in South Africa. Cherries is a good example, for the prices here are between 5 to 10 times more than eating a mango would be. Yet, in Greece everyone eats cherries. The market in SA ignores the fact that by making them so expensive, there is little demand for them.

We eat cherries too. You can buy them also at the farmers but the price is as high as in the supermarket.
That last one is gone. Gave it to my kid.
I can remember the time we had a lot of milk. They spoke about milk ponds and butter mountains... gave it for less to Russia... in the meanwhile we could not afford it.
Believe me they keep the prices high, rather throw food and flowers away as selling it for less. In.the meanwhile the farmer is not payed more for it.

I remember this happening 65 years ago...so nothing new. What I feel sad about is that the people let them do it, without them protesting. It seems the young are only idealists about what they are taught to be idealists about.
