Sanzhi UFO Houses - An Intergalactic Getaway that Never Was

Take a second to paint a picture in your mind of what you think a UFO would look like, or at the very least, what Hollywood films have told us they would look like. Now take that image in your mind, bring it to life, and nestle a handful of them amidst the lush green landscapes of the Sanzhi District in New Taipei City, Taiwan. That's the Sanzhi UFO houses, or at least it used to be.

The Sanzhi UFO houses were a small group of vacation homes whose architectural design was set to mimic that of an alien spacecraft and a flying saucer.

Construction began on the colorful pod-shaped structures in 1978, but was never finished for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to investment losses and a number of automobile related collisions resulting in fatalities during the time of construction.

Yet, despite the best efforts of the Hung Kuo group who owned the site, the buildings were torn down in 2008, though final demolitions were not completed until the year 2010. The site is currently in the midst of being converted into an alternative resort for travelers looking to vacation in the area.

A few weekends ago I was at a spot on the northern coast and found a cluster of UFO shaped beach houses. I don't remember the name of the place right now but I will look it up.

I had no idea this was some sort of a strange architectural trend in Taiwan. It's too bad the ones on your photos no longer exist, would love to visit them.

I plan to go back to take better photos of these with an SLR camera and write an article about them. Will keep you posted.
