The Hackfort Castle - Vorden (The Netherlands)

Tonight I wanted to go to Vorden, a little village near our hometown., to see the Hackfort Castle. (build between (1367-1376)
Around Vorden there are several castle's and country houses that I wanted to photograph already for years but never took the time for it. So tonight it was a nice evening with a lot of sun and I asked my son Sam if he wanted to join, before we went to the castle we first got ourself an icecream. In Vorden you have this icecream shop with the most delicious icecream, so we enjoyed ourselfs very much :)

When we went to the castle we parked the car on the parking just 300 meters from the castle, so we had to walk a little. While we we're walking we saw a lot of little things jumping on the ground, they were baby toads. I think there were thousands of them, all just as big as a nail.

I have read about them just last week that on many places in holland a so called 'Toad Rain' is happening. All baby toads are leaving the birthplace to go into the big wide world. It was nice to see..

When we arrived at the castle we first saw the water wheel, it wasn't working at the moment we were there. But it was a nice view.. We read on the sign that it is still managed by the local watercompany to manage the water arround the castle.

The water wheel has been used in the past to grind grain. There were still some grind-stones laying around.

We walked further to the castle, unfortunately the fence was closed.... Bummer... But we could see over the fence. In front of the castle there were some trees, so I couldnt get a good picture. But the most disapointing was the state of the garden and the castle (as far as we could see), it was not well maintained. The gras was clarified, it was a pitty....

On the right of the castle there was the house which was used as stable house in the time te castle was used by there origin residents.

Overall this visit was a bit disapointed because we couldn't get any closer to the castle and wasn't maintained well. I read this evening that it is no longer private property but property of the local preservation of monuments. I think they can preserve it a bit better ;)

Next time I will go to the 'Ruurlo castle' I know for sure that castle is in excellent condition :)
