Modest Statues in Sri Lankan Temple

Our journey from Negombo on the first day in Sri Lanka took us steadily higher into the forested hills. The urban streetscapes quickly gave way to small villages and rural features. Suddenly we spotted an intriguing sight and asked our driver to turn around so we could stop and take a closer look.

We were met by a monk who welcomed us inside and invited us to look around. He explained that the reason for the head covering was out of respect. These statues were incomplete, awaiting the forming of faces. Once completed the head coverings were removed.
