Merida Homeland Monument: majestic piece of architecture built in honor of the old Mayans

in architecturalphotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

I could not resist joining today´s #architecturalphotography contest organized by @juliank and @photocontests as I just stumbled upon a photo of me at the Homeland Monument, a giant sculpture found at the boulevard Paseo de Montejo in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

Completed in 1956, this impressive structure was designed by Colombian artist Romulo Rozo to pay tribute to the old Mayans who used to live in this part of Mexico. In fact, Merida still has the largest Mayan community from all big Mexican cities - more than a half of its population is of Mayan origin.

As you can see, I visited the site during the day but the locals said it is actually better to come at night when the sculpture is lit up, giving it even more captivating look.

Your always welcome :)

Never knew structures like this existed !!

Another reason for you to come to Mexico, Ben :)

Vypadá to, že je tam dobrá energie. A v noci s plápolajícími ohni to nejspíš je energetická bomba ;-)

Jo, v noci to musí být super :) A máš pravdu, energii starých mayských válečníků to místo opravdu vyzařuje ;)

;-)

I'm from Merida and I love your picture!

Thanks :)

What a good photo! The details that monument has are perfect! The color is special! I congratulate you on that picture!

Wow, spending 3 months in Merida must have been an amazing experience :) Except for the heat :D Thanks for the follow, I will check your content too :)

Incredible! The detail is beautiful!

Wow... It is really cool and historical place... World has unique beauties... I like your pictures... They are all nice coloured and wellframed...

Congrats...

Thank you!

Nice picture. When I was there it was underconstruction and I couldn't do great pics :(

Sorry to hear that... hopefully you will get there again to make some nic shots :)

Really beautiful. I appreciate that even though the sculpture was created over 60 years ago it has a very modern, almost virtual, game-like feeling to it. I am utterly fascinated by the Maya. Thanks for these. I did not know this piece existed.

Thank you for your nice feedback :) Yeah, the ancient Mayan culture was just amazing. Places like Coba or Chichen Itza will literally take your breath away. I am gonna publish more Mexican posts soon, stay tuned :)

Will do. I look forward to it.

These pictures look unbelievable . Wow.

I really like the shape of the architecture, mexico is a very beautiful city want to feel there visiting, greetings from Aceh, Indonesia. : D

thanks :)

Oh man! Are you just visiting? We are heading to Mexico and are getting a 4 year visa! Merida is one of the top places on our list! Don't you just love the detail!

I live in Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya, so Merida was just a two-day trip :) You are gonna love it here! What part of Mexico will you settle down in?

Hi sorry for the late reply. We are rving through Mexico. We leave on the 11th. Playa has a special place to my husband and I as we were there before anyone knew about it. We love it there! Not sure where we are going to settle which is why we have the 5th wheel and are traveling...we know we don’t want to live in the US as we sold everything. My husband had cancer and seemed treatment in Spain and was cured in two weeks. So we sold everything and now help people get real treatment!

I would love to stay in touch with you! You can check us out at regenstation.com

Thanks for your reply! Where are you initially from?
