My trip to Ireland did not go as planned. Due to one of the most epic airline fails I've dealt with in all my travels, I arrived in Ireland almost 2 days late and missed my train from Dublin to a smaller town on the other side on the country. Having only a limited amount of time left to spend in the country, I decided to stay near the Dublin area rather than waste another day or two traveling. I don't like to rush traveling, and want the option to fully explore an area. That being said, Dublin wasn't really my scene and I found myself longing for some nature and a smaller Irish village vibe.

Enter Howth, a small seaside village just a short hour-long train ride away. Perfect for a day trip from Dublin without having to spend a lot of time in transit. I wandered around the docks, explored a really old crumbling church and graveyard (pictured), went for a hike up to the cliffs, and finished the day with dinner at a cozy pub. It was exactly what I needed after the loud and hectic days in Dublin.

If my travel plans hadn't changed at the last minute I probably would not have discovered this little gem. What pleasant surprises have you found due to plans being thrown off track?
