Designed by Robert Hutchison Architecture, this 2-bedroom, wooded residence is located just outside of Seattle in the shadow of Mount Rainier. Covered with red cedar, the 176 m2 house blends silently into the surrounding forest on the banks of the White River.
A courtyard serves as a transition between the exterior and the interior. The living area has been imagined as a Zen space, cut off from the hustle and bustle of the city, the open lounge uses large glass walls to create a feeling of space and light even on rainy days. According to Hutchison, "the interior focuses on the double height space of the house, a comforting exposed structure for heat and connection to nature, and the black steel used for the chimney anchors space with a focal point central ". The footprint of the building was kept as compact as possible, which minimized the disruption of the site by respecting the lush landscape. The residence offers a feeling of space in each room.
