Seattle-based architecture studio goCstudio has completed the COR Cellars winery in the Columbia River Gorge area of Washington State. The 480 m2 space surrounds a protected outdoor courtyard which becomes the heart of the project and welcomes visitors to the new tasting room.
The site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding carved mountains. The project aimed to enlarge an existing winery founded in 2004. The building stands north along the hill while opening onto the landscape and the great views of Mount Hood to the south. To complete the yard at the east end, the design retains the location of the existing metal shed and returns this space to the new bottling facility.
Visitors enter the courtyard between the former hangar and the new structure and are directed to the tasting room. Large glass doors between the tasting room and the courtyard create a direct connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The main views and traffic lanes are located east / west through the building offering visitors views of the vineyards. The large fireplace marks the center of the living room and offers a welcoming space. A roof terrace provides panoramic views.
A simple but refined exterior palette with dark earth tones allows the building to anchor comfortably in the landscape. Inside, the simple palette continues with lighter tones. The whitewashed walls and ceilings covered with clear hemlock reflect the natural light that enters the space. The southwest corner of the tasting room is designed as a living room to encourage visitors to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding landscape.
