In this particular hotel, the inhabited space is revealed in the meeting between the past and our time. It is in the reinterpretation and articulation of existing architectural signs that the project emerges, where each new fragment of architecture is inscribed and danced in its context.
Anchored on the edge of the public garden in the heart of Bordeaux, this mansion from 1850 opens on its 4 floors to this beautiful garden, revealing its majestic decor throughout the seasons. Rich in a strong heritage context, the challenge of this rehabilitation was to create a new living environment adapted to current needs, without distorting existing while providing a new strength that would not fall into a mere mimicry.
The owners wanted to renovate this building to make it more suitable for their lifestyle, more comfortable and especially in keeping with their tastes. The renovation involves a complete refurbishment of the interior while incorporating a partial thermal rehabilitation in accordance with the existing.
The building, very rich in the very good state of conservation of the interior services, such as the woodwork, the parquet and the plaster moldings, established the first orientation of the project, namely, the conservation of this heritage. This raises the question of the enhancement of this singular character. But it was rather a question of diverting this by sublimating this existent by the contrast generated with the new architectural elements.
The interiors have been thoughtful to keep the charm of these spaces, while adding a contemporary touch. This game of contrasts between the old and the new show off to each other.
The allocation of the interior spaces of the building allowed the following distribution of rooms:
On the ground floor, two lounges and the kitchen; on the first floor, a more intimate living room, the office, a gym with bathroom; the second floor is the master suite, with a large bedroom, a large dressing room and a large bathroom; on the third floor two bedrooms for children with en-suite bathrooms; on the fourth floor a guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
The ground floor hosts two beautiful living rooms separated by the kitchen. This one extends towards the big living room, opened on the garden. The kitchen open to the living room boils down to three detached elements: a central island monobloc, a service against the wall based on the proportions of the island and a cabinet in walnut. These three volumes communicate with each other without taking precedence over the existing, the clear central island stands out like a block of ice in a warm context.
From the living room we can go to a private garden in the public garden with a porch dressed on both sides by Corten steel plates, bringing a warm character, inviting rest and sharing a moment with family .
On the first floor, a particular reflection was conducted to develop an office. The walls are clad in oak on which a library leans. Here again the contrast between the hue of the oak and the black parts brings a warm atmosphere to this space. The oak wall cladding also found in the large dressing room on the second floor, highlight and highlight the plaster cornice painted white. All the carpentry arrangements, bathroom furniture, dressings, bookshelves, are designed according to the same aesthetic, mixing these two materials. This comes to create a homogeneity of facilities as a common thread in such eclectic spaces.
Each bathroom has been thought out according to the context, the large bathroom of the parents, all in length is materialized by two ribbons, a clear then a dark making so that the floor, wall and ceiling are only one element. That of children has a more traditional tiling work, echoing the ceilings with cornices, these floors reminiscent of checkerboard, diagonal tile floor compositions.
The choice of colors also contributes to the staging of the space. At the same time subtle in the living rooms or the rooms, it becomes more contrasted in the bathrooms or antechambers. Numerous details punctuate these spaces, both by the choice of materials such as stretched carpets in wool, or by the careful implementation of materials such as the thinning edges of the porcelain stoneware generating "bird's beaks", or simply the care given to the elements created to measure.
Incredible intervention to the building.
