Geometry of Play : Gamifying Strange Spaces

The Unusual Football Field Project.

The Khlong Toei neighborhood of Bangkok is densely packed. The neighborhood is heavily populated, suffers from systemic poverty and has a number of vacant lots used for dumping waste. These abandoned lots are typically strange shapes - residue from the housing grid surrounding it. Generally, public space is lacking here - but - a handful of innovative people saw an opportunity...

AP Thailand (a real estate design group) saw potential in these under-used unique spaces. They teamed up with CJ Worx (a digital agency) to renovate and build amazing and bizarre football pitches for locals to play on. These oddly shaped football pitches aren't the typical rectangles that most are accustomed to, but they provide an awesome new language for football. Each neighborhood team has their own strategy and "home field advantage." (Source)

Throwback Basketball Court

A gradating blend of purple, dark blue, yellow and orange... this funky basketball court looks like a tribute to the 80's and 90's. The throwback baller color-palette is flashy and fun. Big blocks of neon highlight architectural elements of the surrounding buildings while the court is broken into gradients that distinguish zones and free-throw lines.

Located in the Parisian suburb of Rue Duperré, French design group Ill-Studio and Pigalle (a fashion brand) teamed up to repaint the basketball court tucked in between adjacent buildings. This isn't the first time the court received a colorful makeover - in 2009 the same designers teamed up with Nike to give the neglected nook an upgrade.

Embracing The Quirks Of Public Space

Similar to the Unusual Football Field Project, this Basketball court is embracing color and irregularity to create unique social environments. Projects like these are creating huge impact on their local communities with just a little elbow grease and a few buckets of paint.

Amazing ideas, the soccer field in the first pic is awesome, i'll rather play there than playing in a normal one :D !

Likewise, I think that would be a lot more fun :)

yeah imagine if you can score a goal through that angle, only david beckham can do that Sh*** lol :)

What a cool project and an interesting way to add a whole new level to a game. Very cool. The basketball courts look almost fake.

Can't imagine that it's easy to make free throws! Those colors and gradients are actually super distracting... haha.

That's awesome, I'd love to try playing on one of those pitches/courts, it would be fun! Thanks for sharing

There should be more like these! It's amazing how a little paint can go such a long way.

That basketball court is a legitimate work of art. Is it open to the public? I know I'd want to stop by. Enjoyed the video on the football fields as well. Thanks.

I love the colorful basketball courts. I wonder if all that color is distracting? Maybe the NBA will consider a redesign.
