St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne.

This is my entry for the #architecturephotography curated and sponsored by @juliank and @photocontests.

St. Paul's Cathedral is situated in the hub of Melbourne. It was designed by the distinguished, English revival architect William Butterfield. The cathedral is similar to many of the grand Cathedrals in Europe and is built in the neo-Gothic style. This amazing building is considered by many to be Butterfield's finest masterpiece.

It is significant to note that St. Paul's Cathedral stands on the site where the very first public Christian services were held in Melbourne. Dr. Alexander Thomson officiated at this historic service in 1836.

The Cathedrals first foundational stone was laid in 1880 and it took eleven years to build. The three spires, however were not built until 1926. St. Paul's rely on the services of traditional craftspeople to maintain this historical building. The initial restoration of the exterior took place in the 1960's and later on in 2009, extensive restoration was completed both externally and internally.

In recent times, the historic office buildings at St. Paul's house which is adjacent to the Cathedral was extensively restored. This work has provided new ministry and administration facilities for the Cathedral and Diocese of Melbourne.
