NYC BITTER COLD JANUARY SENDOFF LIKELY

Good morning everyone. Rain has started to spread across the NYC area, where localized flooding will be possible today. However, the big story will be the bitter cold knocking on the door to end January and bring us into February next week. This is something I've been mentioning for quite some time, but things are looking even colder than initially expected.

EASTERN SATELLITE

Look for rain to really stat ramping up today as that front is taking it's sweet time getting here. That means we'll have to make a few adjustments temp-wise and precip timing-wise.

Rain is just starting now, so look for things to last into the late afternoon/early evening. A few rumbles of thunder are also likely and we should see a healthy but unneeded 1-2 inches of rain with locally higher amounts before all is said and done. Flash Flood Watches remain in effect and most of the problems will be in your usual spots. Highs today will be 55-60 before dropping fast later on. Winds will also be an issue, especially along the immediate shore where we could see some gusts to near 50mph.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

The sun returns tomorrow, but the wind machine kicks back on as a brief cold shot of air begins to funnel in. Expect highs in the mid to upper 30's tomorrow, but the wind chill will keep things feeling much colder.

We'll be below average Saturday, with sunny skies and highs 25-30, but the cold air doesn't last long as we quickly modify Sunday. That disturbance on Sunday is looking even more weak, so don't expect much action if anything at all flurry-wise. We also modify briefly into the upper 30's to low 40's before more cold air arrives briefly.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

To kick off the week, Monday is looking sunny with highs in the upper 20's to low 30's in most areas. Then, the story-maker begins chapter 1 of our bitter cold story.

On Tuesday, a system begins to near the area. This represents bitter cold arctic air that'll push fairly deep into the eastern half of the Country. The system itself remains snow-hostile aside from the chance of a brief changeover before any precip ends; but once that front fully passes sometime on early Wednesday, it'll be game on.

While I stated that bitter cold was expected, but not as cold as MLK Day, it's looking potentially as cold (or Colder) for at least a 24-48hr period. The timing may have to be adjusted as we're a week away, but look for temps to drop quickly on Wednesday at some point.

How far do we drop? Probably through the 20's at minimum, possibly teens. At this moment, overnight next Wednesday into Thursday is looking like low single digits here for the NYC area and possible negative teens in the interior. This may wind up being the coldest air we have all season.

If everything times out correctly, we may not climb out of the single digits on Thursday, then "modify" into the 15-20 range for Friday; before getting back into the 20's for the first weekend of February. We'll be watching very closely to see how things modify and the prospect of yet another bitter cold blast following the first one.

As far as snow is concerned, good luck with that.
