NYC BITTER COLD REMAINS HOT TOPIC

Good morning everyone. Our impending bitter cold blast here in the NYC are remains the talk, while our brief shot of snow takes a back seat as things are looking even less impressive than yesterday's non-impressiveness.

Clouds are in and obviously we'll remain cloudy for the rest of the day as the leading edge of our arctic blast is knocking on the door. Any moisture that sneaks in early could give us a stray flake or two, but the main bulk of precip won't be here till mid to late afternoon when we're in the upper 30's to low 40's already; so expect any of that to be a period of cold rain.

For the last few day's I've discussed the problems when models depict rain changing to snow with cold fronts and in such a sharp fashion. This is because many times the moisture gets cut off as that cold air rushes in, especially down here in the NYC/Long Island area. For snow lovers, it looks as if this will be the case again as any changeover to snow overnight will be rather brief before ending.

The biggest problem will be tomorrow morning's commute due to the potential for black ice and slippery spots as any moist surfaces freeze when we dip down into the upper teens to low 20's. As far as snow amounts, we'll be lucky to pull off a dusting to 1/2" inch at this point with things looking pretty anemic.

For tomorrow, we recover a little bit temp-wise as we go for mid to upper 20's, but the bottom drops out very quickly in the afternoon. Expect temps to fall through the 20's and into the teens by sunset as the arctic frontal boundary passes by. This could actually touch off a brief heavy snow squall, potentially giving us a better visual show than anything tonight. We'll watch the radar and wait on that because sometimes they don't survive the trip or break into north and south pieces as they get close (just like our summer thunderstorms).

Winds and wind chills will also be an issue, with wind gusts approaching the 35-40mph realm.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Wind continues tomorrow night, making for a very dangerous one as we dip into the 0-5 degree range for the area. Wind chills will be in the negatives and actual lows N&W of the City as well as notoriously colder spots of Long Island could see some negative numbers.

Highs Thursday remain in the 10-15 degree range and we'll see if some areas don't break 10 or not. Regardless, bitter cold is bitter cold at this point; whether you reach 9 or 12 and a stiff breeze is along with it.

On Friday, we slowly modify but remain cold and sunny with low to mid 20's. Saturday we modify even more as we reach the upper 20's to low 30's. Sunday could potentially be the nicest day we've had in a while if the wind doesn't pick up and clouds stay away. Expect highs in the low to mid 40's with sunny skies for at least part of the day before our next system begins to move in for Monday and/or Tuesday.
