Ariana Grande was born in Boca Raton, Florida to Joan Grande and Edward Butera, Jr., and grew up in nearby Lakewood Heights with her younger brother, Frankie. Her father is of Italian descent, and her mother has German and Irish ancestry. After dropping out of school at age 13, she began her career in 2008 as the featured singer in the Broadway musical 13 on Broadway before landing the role of Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television series Victorious in 2009.
