Chapter 2 - The Guardian (Yazhu Wu)
It had now been around a week that His Imperial Majesty had told them to come here and replace the missing Guardian of the battleground: Xinxin Tao. Transient Battleground... well, beside the well-known eponymous game that everyone knew, those places were also top-of-the-tech places where breach interceptors. If a breach appeared close to it, then it would magically attract it, so that it would open in a controlled environment.
As he looked at the big hoop activate, Yazhu wondered how the Guardian of this ground could be so popular. From what he got from others, she was a high school girl who didn't even had her first persona yet. He could see the face of the people turn dark when Bao made a remark that couldn't even remotely be called negative against her.
The owner asked His Imperial Majesty to lend a hand in protecting the battleground until the return of its rightful guardian... but could they really leave this place to a high-school girl? It was an extremely critical task to be a guardian. In a single week, they cleaned and closed no less than five breaches had been intercepted...
"Hoy, I have been trying to speak to you for quite some time now," a young girl who was before him got his attention by gesturing her hands before his face. The girl had dark neon purple hair and eyes, and she had cats ears but the facial traits of an elf.
"What do you want?" he asked frowning.
Before he could say another word, the girl began a thorough explanation of all that he did wrong in replacing the place's guardian. With solid and firm arguments, she reviewed his doings and then she showed him all of the errors that he did during the battle, pointing out that it was a bad use of the firepower of the different players that led them to be injured.
"That's why I refused that it's people from the palace who take over me while I'm away... the only duty that you care about is guarding your assigned lord."
Before he could say anything, Bao jumped before her asked who she was and if she had something against the Imperial Palace. He wished that Bao could just shut it and bear with things once in a while. The girl turned and — as he suspected — introduced herself as a Xinxin Tao... as for his second question, they got another near irrefutably list of arguments that the Palace was the one who had a problem with the country, not the other way around.
That's something he had already reported to His Imperial Majesty. The palace reputation had been on the drop slope and it was totally justified, he had seen with his own eyes how the Imperial nobility was acting. And not just with the commoners, but also with the common nobility. This was obviously a problem that His Majesty felt greatly displeased about.
And that's what he said to her. He explained all that he had seen and done, and what he said to His Imperial Majesty, then explained her His Imperial Majesty's anger. "Ever since his ascension to the throne recently, he has been wracking his minds around the problem of breaches in the provinces, so he hasn't been paying very close attention to other troubles. When he heard the magnitude of the Imperial City's drop of trust in his people's hearts, that sent him flying in a rage."
The young girl looked at him for a long time obviously reflecting, and then she asked him some questions about his decisions. Feeling that it might be the key to show that he really cared for his mission, and that by no means he meant to neglect the duty that was assigned to him on her behalf, he answered sincerely.
"I see... but a transient battle doesn't work that way," she answered. "Unlike wars, transient battle happens on controlled grounds, and those places are made to take into account the specialty of the players of a specific place..."
She spent extensive time to explain him about the strategies that the team would use in the game, and how the battlegrounds here had been made to amplify the use of those strategies. "You see, we are all mostly distant players, you can say that the battlegrounds are made for us, but also that we are made for it, both are right. What kind of techniques and tactics you can employ is mostly defined by the kind of battleground you have debuted and trained in..."
"I failed to understand the specifics," he admitted outright.
"I still need a week or two to finish my reeducation. It took everyone by surprise, but right after my operation, my persona who was ranked middle-tiered awakened to a superior-tiered one. My power and abilities are far better than before, and I'm not still not controlling it enough to use them in a battle."
"So that's what happened... no wonder you suddenly disappeared," said the owner. "i was extremely anxious, ever since you have become the guardian of this battleground last year, you haven't failed to come here for a breach once."
"It was a surprise for everyone, and my state was rather critic. Seems like this persona essence was in fact extremely powerful, but it could only activate for someone with very high compatibility. Anyways, I'm still unfit for duty for now. My reeducation must be completed before I come back. But I worried because I saw people from our grounds admitted to the hospital, so I came to check.."
Yazhu asked her a few questions about the role of a guardian, and once he made sure that he had understood what he should do from her, he asked if she would let him take her back to the hospital saying that she probably sneaked out of it, and would be scolded. She admitted right away sneaking out from the hospital, and thanked him for the offer.
