My Newest Pencil Drawing Is Complete ..
And was inspired by my buddy's dog Nadi. She was born in Thailand and is very Loved and Spoiled by @gooddream. He blogged recently about her trip to the groomers; Doggy beauty salons... one thing I definitely will miss about Thailand .. one of the last before they both start a new adventure. @gooddream and Nadi are heading from Thailand to Vietnam to begin a new chapter in their lives. As many of you know, I am always looking for inspiration in order to fulfill my creative addiction. This was not a hard choice to make. For one, I Love dogs (and all pets in general), and secondly, Nadi was looking so cute in her post grooming photo! I couldn't resist the temptation to further practice my pencil drawing skills. With @gooddream's permission, I printed off the photo and got to work.

I Didn't Name This Portrait Until It Was Finished ..
I Already drew a blind contour of Nadi in the past, and I conveniently named that one 'Nadi'. So I can't call this by the same name.. that just wouldn't be right. I have to come up with another name. I went back to the post (see above for link) and read it again. I found it! She was perched on his couch, and if I know them at all, waiting on a "Treatie Pie" as @gooddream calls them. I mean it wouldn't be right if she got none for holding that pose.. I know she got one ;-P The passage below the picture stated the following:

She came back from the shop with a silly bow on her head but she really doesn't like those things so I quickly took it off of her. I think they could have maybe made her more glamorous, but this is not a fashion choice on our part, this is just so she can be more comfortable... and I think she is.

The "Silly Bow" is the part that stuck out to me and I knew this was going to be part of the name. I assumed if Nadi could talk, she would utter at least this much.. "No Silly Bow." Thus the bow came off and was never spoken of again until today :-/ Our dogs don't like them either. They scratch at them until we take them off. They don't typically have a collar on when in the house or even when they are in the back yard, so having the collar on in general is annoying to them. Adding a bow makes it all that much worse. So there you have it.. My thought process on arriving at this name for my drawing.. "No Silly Bow"

For The Next 1.5 Hours I Drew ..
Okay, well not straight. I work at these drawings a little at a time throughout my day. A minute or two here or a lunch break there. I keep track of my time for the fun of it, and because I am curious if my speed is a determining factor to whether the art is crap or not. If I rush it, it usually shows. So for 'No Silly Bow', the time totaled 1.5 hours. Not too bad for a 5"x7" pencil drawing. Again, I chose to only use one type of pencil, a soft 5B. This pencil is comprised of soft dark graphite. In order to keep some areas lighter than others, I simply keep the pressure light or apply less and blend more. An eraser helps to remove anything too dark. It often becomes my good friend.

Like always, I clipped the Photo (printed in black and white) to my sketch pad, just to the left hand side. There it stayed until the very end. I referenced the picture frequently and tried to the best of my ability to create a drawing that I would be proud enough to blog about. There, I said it.. I am proud of my drawing. I don't consider myself any good at drawing animals or people, so this is a big step into the uncomfortable zone for me. It is also a step I need to take more often, otherwise I may miss out on an opportunity to really enjoy my creativity. This most certainly carries over into other areas of life, but for now I'll stay focused on talking about the art :-)

I Am Now Set To Get Drawing ..
Within these next series of photos, you will see how the drawing progressed. Nadi goes from just a basic blocky style outline, into a beautiful little girl in wait of a treatie pie. I won't go into much detail about these frames, but feal free to ask about something if you are wondering. As I said earlier, I used the one 5B pencil, sketch pad, eraser, my finger for blending, and that's about it.

So Off We Goooo...

Just About Done ..
I applied a few touches at the end and darkened things up a bit to make certain features pop. Other than adding my signature in, nothing more needed for this pencil drawing.

All Done! Shot of my sketchpad and photo clipped in place. She's so cute.. but I am biased being my pups are of the Shih Tzu breed too :-D

I Hope I Did Not Embarrass Nadi ..
Too much with this rendering. My abilities are nowhere near perfected, but I am hopeful that I pulled it off. Maybe after a few more years of practice, I can try again with more success. For now I am proud of what I accomplished. Really though, it helps that she is half way around the world, because she'll have to take a long swim in order to bark at and bite me if she does not like her drawing. But, If I know Nadi.. She's going to like the attention :-P

Here are those photos above, in a nice easy to view frame ..

A Big Thanks To Nadi and Her Human @gooddream ..
For letting me post about this attempt at a decent portrait. I enjoy writing blog entries about my art, but it's all that much more meaningful if I can include some of the inspiration that ignited the creativity in the first place. Thank you Nadi for sitting so peacefully upon that couch (posing for a photo) and for letting Molly and Pepper know that Bows Are Silly and belong in the garbage.. hehehe. Thank You!!!!

About Me ~ The Artist
My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.

“Every once in a while, life throws you a bone. Sometimes that bone is a car ride, a walk, or some cuddle time. Today life threw us a bone. We got bandannas!!! No Silly Bows!" ~ BDMiller :-P
I had to include this photo of Molly and Pepper, returning home from a grooming appointment. It's only appropriate :-)
