✨ NEW - Size Matters! My BIGGEST 80's inspired painting so far!

in art •  7 years ago

One thing I want to do this year is focus on making BIGGER art! Usually I work on relatively small canvases, but now I want to start building up a body of work on larger canvases. In the art world, when it comes down to it - size matters! Simply put, bigger paintings command more attention and can be the focal point of a room. What do you think of this one?

I named it "Totem World" because the features near the middle of the canvas made up of vertical and horizontal lines with a circle on top made me think of a totem pole, and the overall feel of this style of my art is sort of like fun different levels or worlds in an 80's style side scrolling video game.

That is one very cool painting!

Thanks! Is that the Beastie Boys? lol Nice :) YOu gotta fight for your right to paaaarty! lol

That's them - 80's style

!

Feel lucky I got to see them live once :) Sick show!

Me too!

They came to NZ twice and fully rocked out - what got me was how talented they were - they acted like dicks but man could they play

I saw them in 2007-8? They had grey hairs for sure lol But still a blast, and they are super talented. Loved their instrumental jams, still do! Some of their best work IMO. Also their album "Ill Communication" was my intro to the art of Alex Grey :)

Funky

I like bigger art. Excluding one, the smallest pieces I created this year were 20" by 30". I look forward to those seeming tiny.

I think I might to create some smaller works to create more revenue streams, though.

I have quite a few big canvases stacked and ready to create on, the 30 x 40 are the small ones of the bunch! lol I'm excited to see what they'll turn into. Hoping to build a body of more "gallery worthy" art this year, trends around here are galleries dont show small art much, at least not without some bigger ones by the same artist close by lol

I'm excited to see what happens. Curious if you will be driven to greater intricacies as the larger canvases seem to provide that potentiality.

I like it, and think it would look awesome as a single piece on a neutral wall. But (sacrilege for going against the artists wishes) I would hang it turned around to be portrait, with the yellow bit at the top.

But, these worlds have gravity! The broken drop type shapes always drip towards the ground lol ;) I have one more canvas the same size, maybe I'll do it portrait style :)

I know that there are very good reasons for it to be how it is, but somehow I just can't help but see it differently. I hope you can forgive me ;-)

Of course! I find it interesting, I actually went to tip it to look at it that way lol My first painting I did in this style was on a 16 x 20 and Idid it portrait style - this one, "Soul Searching" - IMG_8427.jpg

Now, see, that way up really works for me in this piece. I just had a thought - and the clue is in the names - maybe your pieces seem more like portraits than landscapes to me. Just a thought. Dunno if it means anything or not!

I'll have to see where inspiration takes me for the next one! Soon I'll be done the Raven, Deer and Heron Mandala I've been working on, then I'll think about what's gonna be next :)

This is a great piece, like the American SW meets a computer processor chip. What do you usually lay out first when starting an undertaking like this?

Thanks, glad you dig the vibe! For this style of my art, I start by outlining the big blocks of background color. Then I add outline for some of the details, like the design in the little rectangular part at the bottom, and the pink/purple/blue section outlined in white on the right. Some of the details I add after, on top of the background color. I really enjoy working in this style, it's a bit less "rigid" compared to the symmetry of my Mandala art.

I really like this one. It's got an Aztec feel to it and the colours do a lot for me. Great job!

Thank you! I love to use bright colors in my art, they just make me happy to look at lol
