Preserving Diyarbakir heritage in stone

in art •  7 years ago

With patience, hard work, and love, sculptor Mahmood Nuradin Medyeliglu is preserving his local heritage in stone.

Diyarbakir, known to Kurds as Amed, is considered the unofficial capital of the Kurdish region in Turkey.

Large parts of the ancient walled city, Sur, were destroyed last year when it was under military curfew during conflict between the Turkish army and the PKK.

The ancient fortress and gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
