Pixilation - Stop-Motion Using Real People

Pixilation

"a technique used in film whereby the movements of real people are made to appear like artificial animations."

"Pixilation is effectively a stop motion technique where live actors become the frame-by-frame subject in an animation, by repeatedly posing while a shot is taken and changing pose slightly before the shot. The actor becomes a kind of live stop motion puppet. It is a technique which produces strange, distorted human movement."

Early examples of this technique are El hotel eléctrico from 1908 and Émile Cohl's 1911 movie Jobard ne peut pas voir les femmes travailler (Jobard cannot see the women working).

The term is widely credited to Grant Munro (although some say it was McLaren) and he made an experimental movie named "Pixillation", available in his DVD collection "Cut Up – The Films of Grant Munro

I have never even thought about doing something like this. It probably takes some equipment to accomplish anything on the level of that Golden Oldies video above. Looks totally interesting though.

This is really cool, I didn't know this kind of effect had a name. The breakdown is helpful.
