A while ago I bought myself a set of Faber Castell oil pastel crayons
Thinking this would be nice to also try, next to my watercolour pencils and watercolour paint that I bought for my daughter. The first attempt that I did to make something with these things turned out horrible! I had no clue what I was doing (as usual with new material haha) and I didn't get the feel of it to be honest. I gave up, closed the box again, and put them far away in the drawer never to be opened again.
Then I saw the crayon contest by @erodedthoughts
Now, this seemed to be a nice opportunity to try these things again. I first gave them to my toddler, who was very enthusiastic at first, but soon started to colour the table instead of the paper.. oops. In the meanwhile, I searched on google for some beginners tips for these crayons, as I didn't want my second attempt to be a total failure once again. And then I read about the rule of 3. Start using one colour, fill in the uncoloured spots with another colour, and then use the third colour.
I decided to make something using black paper instead of white
I had no plan and made a picture a bit after I started (almost forgot). I was just trying to get used to the feeling of these crayons because you can't push too hard, it will give you black spots and remove the colour instead.
At that point I didn't think I could make something of it
But I decided to finish it anyway. I decided the forms I mad would get a black line around them, as I liked the contrast. When I was finally done after 2,5 hours (sigh!) I found out you can use turpentine to blend the stuff too. I'm thinking of trying that, but I don't have that at home. So maybe it's best if I first make some more of these works because it would be stupid to buy the stuff for only this piece ... My boyfriend thinks I already have way too much of these things to be creative. And as I get bored easily, I usually don't stick to one thing but take turns when I feel creative using other materials.
I hope you at least like my work a little bit, be gentle as it was the first time ;-) haha

I have a box of oil pastels - still unopened, I might add! Figured my daughter will eventually use them without making a mess... maybe :-)

Lol, bit similar situation haha.. I was such a huge fan of the faber castell watercolour pencils, that I thought everything from them would probably be good quality and easy to use. But maybe I should google a bit more info about the techniques you can use lol.. Did you know you could blend them? I actually got a bit hyper finding that out, as I love the blending of the watercolour pencils. But I have to make some things first I guess, my boyfriend will go nuts, there are several big drawers filled with all kinds of paper and materials lol :)
If you do try, show us please :) have fun!

The black outline does make the colors look rich right.
Looks cool, totally beats that cover drawing on the crayon box.
Screw that little innocent kid who drew it. They should put up yours instead.
