Art Tips for Beginners - The Importance of Fundamentals

in art •  7 years ago

Hello My Fellows !

Many of you always come to me to ask me the same question over and over again... How you got there? How to start? What kind of underpants are you wearing of exercise do you do?

Well, not to say that I am a little bit tired of answering always the same question. This answer has its foundations. And precisely that s the answer itself: Foundations.

See, when you start as an artist you are like a baby, you don't know a thing.

You may be very talented (which may be the best you can bring without any sort of previous study, practice or theory), but that is the best of the possible scenarios. Yet if you are very talented, you will still lack of skill. Because you cannot be born with skill but rather build it along the years.

Skill is something that you build daily, hourly. Skill is, like any other skill such as reading skill, something that can be learned. There is no magic on that, therefor, being an artist and being specially a good artist has nothing to do with magic.

It is directly related to hard work and hard work only.

And hard work can be very complex to define. This is why I want to talk about something called Fundamentals.

Fundamentals are the foundations of the art itself. Is everything what allows you to make a good and needed base to make later on pretty. It is not the act of making something pretty itself but rather the tools that allow you to make something look just right.

My first and final advice to all of you guys and girls who ask me "how to get there", is to buy, if you can, a book called How to Draw, by Scott Robertson. And if you can't buy it but you have an internet connection, you can find a free pdf in different places. Although please consider buying it to support this great master.

How to draw will explain to you how to get started into the drawing itself, the fundamental pillar of arts that will allow you to build whatever your mind brings and to start incorporating design into your work, even tho' that's for the end.

How to draw will also take you through different exercises that will teach you how to make your own homework and how to think in terms of art, which is exactly what you are or at least should be looking for at this point as a beginner.

Let me make this clear...we all been beginners at some point. And if I have to show you my very first works then I will. So don t get offended if me or someone else sends you to study the foundations of arts. It means than that person actually cares for you, and wants to see you grow.

Good luck my fellow artists.

Amazing post

Some very sound advice @anritco - My mom is an artist and she teaches art as well, so I can relate to what you are saying as well as the process she has to go through with her students.

Great post! I've started with digital drawing myself a couple of months ago and I honestly feel like I'm getting better every day! It's tough in the beginning, but everyone starts there and to become as good as you are, there's a lot of exercise needed! I've also gotten the book recommendation before, but haven't had the chance to buy it yet - will definitely do that too :)

I shouldn't say this, but if you don't have the resources to acquire it... just find a free version pdf of it, totally worthy =)

I'm way off from even the "from this" drawing....yikes

Really helpful tips. Thanks

folower and vote forme

@anritco the art for men

Very amazing photography Thanks for sharing I like it your post.. @lakey123

Ok I am following :)

A very remarkable sight, interesting once I read the writing that convey about art, I really like art, but it must be studied with confidence to get satisfactory results.
art is a part of human life, everyone has its own expertise but many people are lazy to know various things. as you say @anritco Currently very easy for us to learn various things.

this becomes a very meaningful learning to keep learning better and a typewriter gets the victory that everyone can enjoy.

terimaksih has taught many things from this post both from the results of images and other positive things.

art is perspective with concentrated creative mind. the hand holding the pencil has little to do. the origin of art is the ability to imagine far ahead without that gift, you are just a drawer

Awesome!!

We all need to be beginners before being professional. Nice post :)

To be good at anything, it takes, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and then some more....PRACTICE.
Oh...and you have to love what you do.

I'm actually speaking from experience. I am a self-taught artist. Checkout my blog, if you don't believe me.

Well... to be honest it's not only practice like a machine but smart practice. I used to apply the equation (practice.practice.practice)^3 since my eighteens-nineteens and even if it worked a little bit, in seven years i progressed less than in eight months of smart practice.

So you probably have to rethink that =)

Haha ...how pedantic! Besides, a machine does not practice....they are programmed. So you probably have to rethink that =)

Well... Good luck with that ego =)

Wow....thank you so much .... and likewise, of course!

It is quite interesting (and also funny) how you came to my post agreeing with what I exposed for later on calling me pedantic and behaving arrogantly.

Clearly you didn't even grasp the title since I am talking that we all artists (even the most skilled and experienced ones) need to have clear foundations in order to make a solid base for our artworks.

Just to be clear, and if you try to put yourself in an objective POV, you will understand that your ego is blocking you from taking a friendly advice that may make you develop much faster as an artist.

Like everything else in life, not just art, foundation is the most important. Without it everything crumbles. On this, I completely agree.

Thanks! It is really so!

Really useful, thanks fot the tips!
