Your Support To Your Fellow Artists Is important... Here Is Why

Hi Everybody !

I want to share with all of you a little bit of what my career as an artist and my experience with many other artists taught me about social recognition and acceptance.

Let's put a little bit of context here.

I come from a country where the artists are not respected at all: I bet you know this kind of situation where a "client" comes and asks for an artwork in exchange of a ridiculous offer such as "recognition" or "why should I pay for this... my nephew could draw it too".

Really, I am not kidding.

And I am not only talking about visual artists but also musicians: one of my brothers used to have a garage band and I remember pretty well that every time they wanted to have a concert anywhere, they had to pay for it.

Exactly, that is Argentina. Although these kind of situations is very common in other parts of the world.

This is something that doesn't really encourage artists to get further, because they start feeding this beast called "I am not worthy". And it is not only something that plays an emotional role on the subject, but also economical and professional in general. Think about this...

...if the person thinks that is not worthy, they will accept any amount of money for any work, (Or will even not receive any money at all in some cases and be okay with that). And this is harmful for the artist himself and for other professional that share the same profession.

It is harmful for himself because the artist will struggle with money, which will make him/her enter in this mental stage called "survival" and stop developing his/her skills. And emotionally it will also hit the artist because he/she will think that is not worthy, and its art will always be shitty, and the stigma of failure wins.

And It is harmful for other artists because accepting crumbs for a work makes the whole standard of payment to fall apart and clients will start lowering the paying prices to the average market. Making clients to not accept offers from artists that been studying and working and practicing for more than a decade non-stopping (such as myself, even tho' I haven't worked and studied for a decade yet but eight years).

This is why social support, cheers and critiques are so important for the artist. Because this makes it all to be worthy.

Social acceptance encourages the artist to get further and get better. In the best of cases it will also encourage the artist to be more humble and accept more critiques and corrections to its work, and get even further and better. And of course, since all the business are made with another people, business are also something that regards to realm of social connections and relationships.

You may be thinking, why it is so important for an artist to have a social acceptance if in the end the art is what makes him/her happy?

Because we are social animals. That's all... if we would do things only for ourselves, we would probably just survive instead making our lives better. We want to succeed in things and get to better places, better features from and for ourselves just for share them with others.

Think about it: if you are a materialistic dude or dudette you probably want a new car or new expensive shoes/clothes, rings and stuff for showing to others. You don't want them for just watching yourself in the mirror of your house, you actually have it for showing to others in a display of social status.

Artists are not different, but their concept/conception of it is more ethereal. Their art is their way of showing their status and their place in the society as creators and narrators of visual stories where they can take you to. Our best intention and wish is to take you to a journey in every different artwork of ours.

This is why every time you show your support, and if you are a client that pays fair, you are actually making the whole market and professional environment better. This is the best you can do, and if you are part of that very little group, you have my gratitude.

So next time you got the opportunity to choose if supporting an artist or to make its life more miserable, think about yourself... how would you like other people to be with you if you were in the place of that person?

Thanks a lot for your support and I see you in the next one!

The value of the work of many artists is truly not recognized in its proper dimension, they try to express the world through their work in a creative way their inner world, it is sometimes paradoxical that those who do not value the creation of the artist then show them proud as a trophy that was his success and not the work or the creator, your reflection is very rewarding

you are very positive and positive people always make success in their life by the way u make a good decisions thanks for sharing and best of luck in your life :)

Very profound and true! Congrats my fellow artist from this Vast World of Craftmenship of Art. I'm an artist too and i've been thru situations like this on wich you're asked to "offer" discounts/free music just for exposure and reputation or i've received answers like " ah...music it's something easy...everyone can do it"...and now we see thru tv shows as the voice or other fancy stuffs ... everyone can be a star...Unfortunatelly untill tv/social media and other mickey dee's out there won't stop promoting this illusion of "annyone can do it"... Art will be hidden'more and more. Wish you all the best and definetelly the artists need to understand that if we are not supporting each other, no one will do it cause they don t understand the phenomenon of being a creator. Regards to you all. www.luciannagy.com

I would love to know how YOU handled the situation(s) when people thought you should draw for them for "free" . ?
If you feel like sharing that too...
:-)

Great post! Totally agree. Being a graphic designer I have experienced all of this through my professional life

Excelente post, saludos.

Supporting art is so important especially in today's cultural climate. Too many time children especially are pushed further from art in favor of more "traditional" careers. Thanks for putting this out for people who may not understand the impact support can have for artists. :)

Great post! Happy to have read it! :)

The starving artist isn't dead yet, lol. But I don't see a happy ending for most of us. I was on a different platform and I saw a drawing that took no effort but had a caption along the lines of "I love him even though he's shit" - 300,000 upvotes - I guess it resonated with people. Next I saw a clip of a man playing an instrument and singing, a performance that took years of work to attain, so good it brought tears to my eyes - 6 upvotes. (I reposted the clip here on Steemit; it was Einar Selvik, doing Nordic folk music.)

I am currently engaged in selling off homesteading and carpentry equipment so I can continue to make art. My expenses are as low as can be and I should get enough money to last another 6=8 months, if I'm lucky. But if art isn't valued none of this will matter: As bad coin drives out good, I imagine bad content will drive out good as well.

I get quite a few people coming to me "you should just give me your work and not charge or give me a big discount" for one reason or another. I get "I am making a movie and I will feature your work for screen credit" a couple times a year. Just recently got "I am your biggest fan please give my 50% off. I have memorized your bio, that should count for something" .The best one I had was someone wanting about $1000 worth of work for free claiming that they were a fashion designer getting ready for a new york show and my accessories would be all over the fashion press if I just gave it to them for free. Promise. And I get "I am a student and can't pay, would you please just give me something" several times a year.

mmmm

ESPECTACULAR... SIGUE ADELANTE Y COBRA POR TU TRABAJO LO QUE CONSIDERES QUE VALE...
NO DEJES QUE ALGUIEN LE PONGA PRECIO, EL QUE REALMENTE QUIERE UN TRABAJO TUYO, LO PAGARA...

ME ENCANTA LO QUE HACES... LOS DIBUJOS SON GENIALES.

Hi. @anritco A strong denunciation of everyday life. Few people take the time to read the question and if they do it is probably not part of the problem. He did not exclude me from that group of people who do not support what happened to me once I wanted to get a tattoo of something that at that time described as simple and, although I did not complain to the artist, I left indignantly in his studio referring negatively to his work. Of course there is a background to my reaction and that, although the figure was not high either, in relation to my dividends was too much.

Today, I understand that I was misunderstanding things, for example, it was not the artist's fault, the inflation rate in my country, much less the one who dared to receive a decent loan for his work and I did not do it for the my own.

In life, circumstances may arise in which our work is undervalued and we are responsible for it. Besides that it is not an exclusive situation for artists.

I understood that money always has and even more people with a lot of this, usually people who do charge well for their work. Then, we must be supportive among us. You have to bear in mind that you are asking for someone else's work because you can not do it yourself, either due to inability in time, time or simply lack of motivation.

There is no price to the work of others. It is easy to say that it is too much when you have to pay but not when it is you who is charging.

When artists are not valued by society, those who fail to see their true worth are the first to suffer.
