New York - The work of British artist Francis Bacon sold for US $ 142.2 million at an auction in New York, United States (US). The painting was also crowned as the most expensive artwork ever auctioned.
The painting entitled "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" consisting of three images was completed Bacon in 1969. The painting was immediately sold for the first time following an auction at Christie's auction house.
"This artwork sold for US $ 142.4 million after being auctioned for just six minutes," said a spokesman for Christie as quoted by AFP on Wednesday (13/11/2013).
The artwork of a man who lived from 1909 to 1992 succeeded in breaking the record of the world's most expensive artwork previously held by Edvard Munch's "The Scream", which sold US $ 119.9 million at Sotheby's auction in May last year.
This is the first time the Three Studies of Lucian Freud is offered in an auction and the offer opens at a price of US $ 80 million. Unfortunately the auction hall does not want to reveal the identity of the buyer of the painting.
Bacon and Freud met in 1945 and became close friends. They often paint together before their relationship stretches around the 1970s.
Francis Bacon's other works include a painting entitled "Screaming Pope" which is also auctioned at high prices.
