KUPKA, Frantisek
(Opocno, Bohemia, 1881-Puteaux, France, 1957)

A Czechoslovak painter born in Bohemia. He is one of the creators of Abstractionism, with an elaborate production in a somewhat individualistic attitude. With an academic formation made in Prague and Vienna, he settled in Paris in 1896, expressing an interest in Symbolism and Modernism.
Aspects of interest in his production consist of the philosophical and spiritual intention that he attributes to his works, product of his theoretical reflection on theosophy and which he exposes in his essay published in 1923, "Creation in the Plastic Arts".
His painting in the 1920s records, in some cases, figurative references and mechanistic symbols. However, his pictorial production in Abstractionism is reinforced by his participation in the Abstraction-Creation group and, decades later, in the Hall of New Realities. In the 50's he is recognized as one of the pioneers of Abstractionism.
