”Old Greiner Barn” 5.5”x7.5” (#3302) graphite pencil on smooth bristol paper
by Lee Gordon Seebach

An Old, Iowa Barn

This is a graphite pencil drawing I made as a study for a watercolor painting (a project that didn't work out). It's an old barn near Dinsdale, Iowa, on an acreage that has been abandoned by the owners. Like so many old barns in Iowa, they are no longer used for the original purposes of raising livestock, storing straw and hay, milking cows, etc. Instead, they may serve now as storage buildings for farm implements or what have you, but often are just left to deteriorate. They are not torn down for sentimental reasons or because of the cost to do it. However, sometimes farmers will have them burned down with the local fire department standing by to make sure that the fire doesn't get out of control.

Whatever the reasons may be that some of these wonderful old barns are still standing, it's fortunate for artists like me who grew up on a farm and find them to be great subjects for our paintings. They can be a cliche, but I don't care! I love them!

I hope you enjoy seeing this drawing and have a great day! 😀 ☮️ ❤️

I like the texture in the roof.
Good art @chessmonster.
Have a great day too.

Hiya @artguy ...Thanks for your continuing support of my blog!

It's my honor.
Have a great day .
:)

I also used to spend a lot of time In the countryside as a child. So i can understand how you feel about the painting.
Loved it. Have a great day too)

Thanks! @yaan Always nice to get your comments.

Incredible @chessmonster! This is amazing! Really glad I'm following you. Can't get enough art in my feed.

@kommienezuspadt So glad you appreciate me. LOL More to come...stay tuned. 😎

Beautiful art @chessmonster

Many thanks! @sapan

certainly not a cliche. A piece full of sensibility.

Hi @siloe Thanks! Cliche or not, at least I try to approach drawing/painting barns in a unique, personal way. 😀

I like the way you emphasis on main objects and use different pattern for less important object. I learn this tequenique before 1 month.
Like to see more sketches of you.

Have a Nice Day sir.
:)

Yes, indeed... More to come... be patient LOL Thanks @motivator

Very nice @chessmonster! The modern world does not make as good a subject as the world that is passing out of view!

I've never seen the tag 'artporn' before. :)

Have a great day!

LOL yes, I keep seeing "foodporn" tagged on a lot of recipe/food posts and thought it would be funny to do "artporn!" 😂 Thanks for commenting @tonyr

And yes, driving around the Iowa countryside, you see all those Morton buildings that have absolutely no charm or taste (except to the proud owners). Just metal boxes. Too bad. Very sad.

Yes you are right.
The paintings you also remind me of my father's House buildings that have long since sold out.
Your painting is great and I am glad to see it

@bosjaya nice to hear from you as always. Thank you very much.

You got a gift. A talent. Its nice work

Very kind of you to say so @brownlady Thank you.

Just stating the facts.. Your welcome sir

Incredible, Lee. I need to up my game now with my drawing skills. I love the balance of light you've got with such simple strokes. Masterful.

Thank you very much, @rbennett You might like to check out the pencil books by Ted Kautzky. I always admired his drawings (and watercolors, too).

Looks like Ted Kautzky's pencil books are out of print in the UK.. second hand copies are going for over £100. I've found a copy of one in PDF form though about drawing and composition.
Cheers for the recommendation. Composition is yet another area I'm working on and trying to be more mindful of. This art business is a never ending road... !

Composition and design? Got another one for you: Tony Couch's "Watercolor: You Can Do It!" I'm not a huge fan of his paintings, but the information in the book is outstanding and well worth checking out.

Darn! Another that seems to be a US only. Got copies of both on US Amazon though.. I tend to paint with acrylics mainly and I'll be transitioning to oils for outdoors once I get a carrier and easel built.

I've found and ordered a copy of Tony Couch's Key to successful painting - looks like it'll have a lot of the same basic principles - thanks very much.

I haven't seen that book but I think it will, too. I'll look into it myself!

Awesome graphics. It's amazing what you can do with a simple pencil :)

Thanks! @keepdoodling Yes indeed, whoever invented the pencil had a great idea! 😎

Reminds me of growing up in Iowa and going to grandparents farm to visit. Nice.

Nice sketch @chessmonster :)

Hello @praful Thanks very much!

Welcome @chessmonster :)

We have a fair amount of abandoned barns in my area (Ohio), and I think they make for pretty cool subjects for photography/art. Good job on this drawing, it looks great :)

@deadspace Thanks! I use a "broadstroke" technique with pencil leads sharpened on a sandpad at an angle, with the flattened side applied to the paper in a single, clean stroke.

Great drawing! :) And as far as cliches goes, I find that often it's not cliche enough! ;)

Hi @mayasky Thanks! Please note the "artporn" tag. LOL I keep seeing food/recipe posts with the tag "foodporn," so why not? ha ha

This is really amazing! This is the kind of post that inspires you.

I'm so glad @artsyppl ! Thanks for the nice comment. 😊

Very very cool! I really like it!

Thank you very very much! @alovelymess

You're welcome!! :) :)

Fantastic sketch! I'd love to see it coloured :)

Thank you @luja !

tag "artporn" lucky that its not nfsw 😀, i wouldnt have seen it

Just having some fun with the tag. Photographers/recipe/food posters label theirs "foodporn" so why not "artporn?" 😎

Love that one, was it an abandoned building? Who would not love to explore

Thanks @steem2thmoon Read the text and it tells the story.

I am not a professional reviewer but i can definetly see that you have a own style and put a lot of effort in your works. I like them.

That's good to hear @tzap90 Thank you

Your study is beautiful. Sorry to hear that your watercolor didn't work out like you wanted but maybe it's meant to be graphite, it's perfect just like that. Definitely checking out your site. This is the kind of stuff I want hanging in my home. :)

@dogmakeup Thank you very much for the nice comment and the upvote!

Is it a small drawing or a large pencil? Looks great! I plan to start using more watercolor soon. I look forward to seeing more content.

@drawingablank Thank you. It's 5.5"x7.5" so it's not very large. Good luck with your watercolor work!

The incredible works of art

Much obliged @black-eye

@chessmonster: One more master piece. Have you sent them to exhibition like art gallery to showcase?

@inviter Thank you. Yes, I've shown in art galleries, but only have one at present.

Farmers sometimes burn them down with the local fire department? That would be a great painting scene too :-)

Yes, it would!

I love barns. They make such interesting subjects, love this!

Me, too, but I guess that's obvious! Thanks for commenting @teddifer

I like your art .
