Painting Portraits

Probably the most difficult subject to capture in paint is a human being's face. John Singer Sargent, the great portrait painter and one of my role models, said, "A portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth." I think he said this in jest, but perhaps was half serious, too. You're going for a "likeness," and that's a damned hard thing to do well. I feel that if I can nail one I should kiss my brushes.

With "Ray," I think I nailed him exactly. At least, this is how he looked to me. Someone else might feel differently, and perhaps find something wrong with his mouth.

Have a fabulously beautiful day today and every day!

Liberty 😀 Peace ☮️ Love ❤️

And yes, the rumor is true: I've been known to pick a mean five-string Bluegrass banjo. Shown here with my Gibson Mastertone RB250. "You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy."

Ray looks like James Bond.
Thanks for sharing, always waiting for more of your amazing works ;)

"Bond. James Bond." 😀

I like your painting very much. I wish you all beautiful days too.

Many thanks @luckysteem 😀

Greetings: Love the painting, all are wonderful. If you are interested I have one painted by my father, I was told, while he was in Korean POW camp.

@roadscribe Thanks! Glad you like my art. And welcome to Steemit!

And it looks very effortless

@siloe Thank you...that's the look I always shoot for in all my work so that's good to hear! 😎

impressive painting! I was also impressed with the expression of 'nail' someone on the canvas :D
and I wonder why Sargent especially mentioned mouth because I'm always in trouble with eyes..

Hi @doramee It's all hard to capture. Sargent had to choose only one feature and it could have been any of them but maybe he chose the mouth because it would be the most humorous. I don't know, though, because the nose might have been even funnier! Thanks for the nice comment!

hahaha you're right . Every feature of face is battlefield for me. It's so exciting to get reply from respectable artist like you. I just started steemit yesterday but I'm already in love with this :D

Oh! Well, welcome to Steemit! I wish you the best of luck @doramee

Chess great portrait again i like to see people with that big talent

Nice One.

Damn, brother. You're excellent at doing portraits too? Multi-talented, eh? Haha.

I remember you from last year when I first discovered your paintings. It's nice to see that you're still active. Btw, I think it's obvious that I really like your paintings. :)

Nice to meet your acquaintance again. 😉 So glad you like my efforts, and yes, I post once or twice a day on Steemit... I think it's a great place to share my work and it has great potential for taking off, probably soon.

A very good artwork sir ☺️ as always 😊👍
