Have you ever wondered who started the first diner?

The American Diner was created in 1872 by Walter Scott. Scott started by selling food out of a horse-pulled wagon to employees of the Providence Journal in Rhode Island. Scott's diner was considered the first diner with a walk-up service. Walter's Wagon had windows on each side to accommodate customers on both sides of the wagon. Commercial production of such "lunch wagons" began in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1887, by Thomas Buckley. Buckley was successful and became known for his "White House Cafe" wagons. Mr. Charles Palmer received the first patent in 1893 for his diner, which he billed as a "Night-Lunch Wagon." He built his "night cafes" and "night lunch wagons" in the Worcester area until 1901.
