So today I finally finished a long over due project. I have a skoolie that I've converted over to a camper and over the past 2 years @bethvalverde and I have been working on a mosaic. Not just any mosaic, a huge mosaic countertop. Today was the day that we decided to seal it. Actually let me back up. Since neither of us have ever attempted this we decided to practice first. Beth made a round mosaic from the sea glass pieces we collected off the beach when we were in Puerto Rico. We decided to do that one first. Good thinking. We definitely made some mistakes, like putting the resin on to thick, not pre-heating the epoxy, plus a couple others but it turned out okay.
So today after #themorningbowl I started on the prep work. Things I didn't do the first time, like warm up the epoxy but letting it set in water for a hour.
The next step was vacuuming the mosaic and taping off the drawers.
Then it's time to mix the epoxy and the resin. I'm mixing equal parts on a disposable bowl.
Then as I pour the mixed resin @bethvalverde begins to work it into the cracks.
After a good thick layer (obviously I didn't learn) the process of working it fully into the cracks and removing the excess begins. This is very arduous and painful on the hands.
It takes roughly 30 minutes to work it in but eventually it's done for now and the drying process can begin.
After it tacks over in roughly a hour its time to go check on it and remove any air bubbles. This is done by heating the surface of the resin with a torch.
I'll keep checking it over the next couple hours but here's the finished counter.
Peace out y'all. Dave
