I began this painting, I think, in January of this year. Spent some time with it, then it became overwhelming. Sometimes I know how much work it is going to take to finish it, and realize that's a long time to spend with one image. So, I took a break and worked on some other pieces. I intended to do one, then come back to this. But, after doing the one, I thought it would be fun to do one that matched with it as a set. I'm not sure it works as a set, but whatever. Then I had another I wanted to do, and so three paintings later, I decided to finally come back to this one.
First, I put it on the easel, and spent an hour working on the corner facade of the building on the left. Those lines weren't straight, and I hadn't gotten the windows quite right, so I tried to fix that. Then I stared at the canvas. Saw how much more there was to do, and put it away.
I brought out a blank canvas and prepped it. Sorted through photos, printed photos, and considered everything I had. Nothing inspired me, so back on the easel this one went! I decided to take another approach. Ignore what's left to do. Focus. Focus on one area, refine it. Choose the least finished area and bring it up to par with the rest. So I did.
I worked on the buildings to the right of the Paramount sign. They were poorly put together and needed a lot of work. I want to work from the center out, making sure the center is well realized. It is the focal point, afterall. Then I worked on the Boston Opera sign, and the Romeo and Juliet sign to the right. Once this area is set. I'll move on to the brick building, where I already did some work on the edge. After that will be the arched building, that I really want to "pop."
I hope you enjoy watching the progress of my paintings. I also blog about photography, homesteading, cute animals, antiques, and anything else that excites me. Follow for more!
