A handcarved MAMMOTH IVORY mask

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today im going to share with you some efforts i made using a new "technique".
Actually i glued a lot of tiny restpieces of MAMMOTH IVORY together, which allowed me to make a sculpture, which is unusally tall. So i glued them together, and carved them into the shape of a face.
And thats the result, which i have to say i really satisfying to my eye.

To make the surface shiny like this, you have to spend a lot of time. Which includes a few steps.
First of all i glued the pieces togehter, like i said before, than i carved it wiht my dental drilling machine, afterwards i have some carving knifes, i call them Schaber, with whom i smooth the surface and the last step is sandpapering it. Then the object is ready to polish. For that i use a polishing machine with two different polish waxes.

To finsish this project i decided to put it on a ebonypedestel. Thats important for the presentation.
(Thats actually not the best picture, but i will use it, that you can see how it came out in the end)
