We don't get much in the way of good street art here in Vietnam and this is probably because of the fact that laws work a lot differently in this country and the punishment for defacing property is rather extreme. I don't necessarily disagree with this notion because left unchecked, street art for the most part is just vandalism and done without permission. Some people still do it anyway though and it is largely not very good.
I discovered a few new ones yesterday that were more like gang signs than art, but at least they were colorful.
I've seen this same name at multiple other locations in the area, so I am guessing whoever this person is , that they are rather active in their tagging. I normally don't appreciate when someone just paints their call sign and even though it is a global staple of street art, I think it is the laziest and least-inspired kind. At least they had the decency to do it on a building that isn't being used and has been in a state of being torn down for several years.
This is a part of town where basically everything is tourism related and since there still isn't any tourism, they probably had a long amount of time to get the job done undisturbed. This combined with the fact that I don't think anyone is going to care what someone does to a condemned and waiting-to-be-demolished building probably gave them a free pass to do whatever they want even if authorities did see them doing this.
I can kind of appreciate the artistry in this second one although it is still quite amateurish. Upon closer inspection I was able to determine that at least one, perhaps both of these was done with brushes and not spray. Maybe spray paint is banned in the city? I don't have any idea because I have never bought any. I do know there are places in the world where such bans exist and they are probably to prevent graffiti.
Getting even closer you can see the massive brush strokes and how the person must have done this in a rush with little concern as to how much paint they were using... and they used a lot.
So do I think this qualifies as street art? No I do not. This is vandalism in my book but people are bored so they gotta do something I guess. I'm just happy that the did it on a building that doesn't really have much of a purpose and the land owner probably didn't even care. This is one of the few beachfront plots of land that doesn't have some sort of massive construction project on it and i would imagine that in a year or two, that this will change.
