A parliament of owl's.

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

Upon learning that a group of owl's are referred to as a parliament, I wanted to use it as a reference somehow.

It was the subtle inspiration in my last post, Nocte Ineptia, where I used the words
Night's parliament begins.

After posting I scratched out this drawing of a session of parliament.

For me the idea of A government of owl's conjures images of the Westminster system of government.

Old men in silly white wigs arguing like private school boys.
The old boys who didn't want to give up their spot on the school debating team.
Privileged and out of touch sitting on the back bench in parliament waiting for their fat six figure pensions to clock around.

Apparently owl's seldom gather in a group.

They were given the name parliament due to their reputation as wise creatures.

In Australia the parliament sessions are broadcast as question time, on The Australian broadcasting corporation.

I have watched this several times, in the interest of keeping up to date and seeing what the publicly elected politicians are doing with regards to running the country.

I'm not sure a government of owl's is a fitting term to describe wise after watching these broadcasts.

These bloopers I obtained from YouTube. Should you have several hours to kill you can find lengthy coverage on YouTube.

You can obtain complete recordings of these sessions from the government link below.

Although I must prepare you to be grossly underwhelmed.

Conversely, one can visualize the Owl Parliament as an improvement in wisdom and integrity over its human parallel.

Coincidentally, a grouping of crows is called a 'murder'.
And "Other fun examples of “group” names include: an ostentation of peacocks, a parliament of owls [as you noted], a knot frogs, and a skulk of foxes."

Crows mate for life, and come to each others defense in times of peril. Maybe we could learn something there.

Indeed, the system needs adjusting. Great drawing, GBM:)

I think 'parliament of owls' is my favourite collective noun, probably followed close behind by 'troop of monkeys', or 'sloth of bears' - that last one just because I love paradoxes...

Seems you've identified another paradox in the so called 'wise' heads of parliament. Loving the artwork by the way, adorably kooky.

There's actually a pretty good lofi band called Parliament of Owls - I always think of their song The One I Love when I hear the term :)

good post ..,
