How I paint comics - The Techno-Templar #26

in art •  7 years ago

page 6 EN copy.JPG

26th page of my home-made, surreal and sci-fi graphic novel, along with its complete creation process.

Remember? Devlok has been swallowed by the machinery of "Node 32"! Simultaneously, Techno-Templars are trying to breach in its local network to intercept and shut our protagonist!

I believe you realised that the background is, for once, digital. The page comes from a sequence that is happening in a virtual environment so I thought it'd make sense to work it that way.

The characters nonetheless, are still on paper.

The difficulty in this page (besides the characters) was with the light, because it comes from all around. I kind of had to guess how it's supposed to react with the reliefs so I got confused many times.
Devlok_page 26_Progress 4+.jpg

Devlok_page 26_Progress 5.jpg

Pretty much an easy one since there is only one colour, I am not so sure anymore but I think it's basic cyan.
Devlok_page 26_Progress 6.jpg

It looks ok but there are several things I thought only after; I shouldn't used that much paint. As the place is very lit, the colour should have been less everywhere, leaving more white spaces. Also I should have let more openings in their outlines to blend with the light.
Devlok_page 26_Progress 9.jpg

But it's no use to get worry of that, the drawing is finish, now let's go for something else. ERROR PROCESSED.
Devlok_page 26_Progress 10.jpg

So for the background, I did an horizon and curved lines to have an idea. Then I actually erased the lines not without having marked some important points on the outlines of the panel. It's difficult to see, but on the right vertical outline of the panel, there's a small mark at the horizon line.

I am no 3D pro, neither a digital painter, so my techniques are rudimentary.
Anyway, after having scanned the page with the characters, I picked up their color and made this simple gradient.

Then for these screens, I made a bunch of squares and rectangles and spherized (If I remember correctly).
Devlok_page 26_Progress 12.jpg

And same with those lines. I probably played with the blending modes but no idea anymore wich one.

Puting back the characters, the thought bubbles.

Lol yeah it's dark art indeed :D !!! True thes old animes with rotoscopy are damn basement artist slavery work but worth it :D

Well drawn and painted! Oh what a delicious conundrum, to have to "kill" your "self" to get your body back! :)
but maybe they find a way around totally losing all knowledge of this? like leaving a message to themselves somewhere in the system

Hi @stahlberg! Glad you dig that scene, .. ow... that would have been ... a great idea ... but I am afraid it's something else ... maybe not that subtle :D (chhht)
Thanks for passing by and for making me learn the word "conundrum", didn't know it. Sounds good as what it means.

Dope

Awesome post and artwork! the way you draw is really clear, neat, and comfortable to read. I suddenly wonder.. what is difference between graphic novel, and comics? it seems graphic novel has more words, sentences.. I have asked people but still don't get it clearly.
