More Insanity!

Who:
This is another piece for New Haven Games' Myth & Magic. One of the half page digital ink illustrations, in fact. It was done about 18-20 months ago (roughly).

What:
This half page digital ink piece was created as a labor of both love and hate, and was the product of a little blood, lots of sweat, and buckets of tears. It was created almost entirely within Photoshop. The initial pencil sketch was very loose, and therefore not overly useful other than basic blocking in of the composition. (Pro Tip: A solid, detailed, sketch and/or underpainting can make or break a piece of art!)

Design:
When facing a daunting task, I often look for one of two things to bounce back and forth between: the fun and the mundane. I know I will enjoy the details. I know I will enjoy seeing it all come together. What I do not enjoy is the grind. And with this particularly insane style choice, it was, in fact, quite a grind. There is a TON of noodle work and laying in and erasing out. In the end, I think it works, but after giving is some time I can see several places where it works less than I thought it did at the time.
Probably the most fun for me (as usual) are the character designs. The briefs on these characters were fun and interesting. That helped a great deal. Taking those short paragraphs and turning them into characters on a page was both a challenge and a lot of fun. The rogue in the bottom right, for example is described (essentially) as an ugly woman fond of backstabbing and skulking about. I don't think I had ever even attempted to illustrate a less-than attractive woman before. Fantasy art is all about fantasies and unrealistic ideals, after all.
Fun Fact: the generic barbarian enemies were modeled after the barbarian figure from Heroes Quest. lol.
