Es la más deportiva dentro del catálogo de motos naked de KTM y en 2017 recibe pequeñas mejoras para continuar como una maxinaked de referencia. La 1290 Super Duke R, que en 2016 ya contó con una versión especial con numerosas piezas del catálogo de Power Parts, ha visto aumentada su potencia hasta los 177 CV, cumpliendo además con la normativa Euro 4. En 2018 permanece sin cambios.

Estos cambios en el motor permiten un mayor rango de uso a bajo y medio régimen, mientras que el nuevo escape ofrece un sonido más suave y reduce las emisiones de CO2 en un 10%.

Dispone el modelo 2017 un buen número de ayudas electrónicas, como el ABS en curva de Bosch 9.1 MP desconectable con modo Supermoto, el control de tracción y el control de velocidad crucero, y suspensiones WP tope de gama. Opcionalmente se pueden completar estas ayudas con el cambio rápido bidireccional, el “quickshifter +”, que permite subir y bajar de marcha sin utilizar el embrague y sin cortar el gas. KTM ofrece adicionalmente un paquete llamado “Track Pack” con el sistema de salida, el control de tracción ajustable, un modo circuito, conectividad con Smartphone y sistema anticaballito desconectable.

La instrumentación es muy completa, con una nueva pantalla multifuncional TFT que permite visualizar y seleccionar todas las opciones que ofrece esta moto. La nueva Super Duke R cuenta con el nuevo faro delantero que adoptan todas las Duke y Adventure 2017, con bombillas tipo LED y con luz diurna. El depósito de gasolina también es de nueva factura, como los tapas laterales y las entradas de aire.
