Materials:
๐ท Canson watercolor paper
๐ถ Paintbrush
I find these four useful. Flat tips provide easy and wide application, the rounder tips provide soft blends and the thin ones for detailing.
Also a jar of water and tissue for washing and wiping excess water and testing pigment.
๐ท White Acrylic
๐ถ Watercolour 36 color set
My materials are artist grade but basically the cheapest kind you can find.
Process Photos
I am going to share the basic process which can guide you to making good watercolor paintings. Simple but it may be difficult at first.
A part of better learning is exploring, making mistakes and repeating exercises.
(1) SKETCH
๐ท the most basic skill is your mastery with pencil drawings. It's like the blueprint of a building. No good foundation? The artwork will not be as good. Do your research and practice, if you succeed with this then you're on a good path. Make sure accuracy and likeness is captured.
(2) Layering colours and your colour theory
๐ถ Study color and blending. How do you make flesh tone? Where do the shadows fall? Mixing gradations?
All of the midtones and highlights (leave out method) and shadows can be applied here.
Study:
- Gradations and tonal value
- Color theory
(3) Inking and highlights
๐ท Here I put all the dark tones, grey, green, black. And I used a 0.5 pen (or any black sign/gel pen is fine) or if you prefer to not use a pen and go ahead with watercolor then it is still good.
Just draw some lines where the darkest shadows are and I put white acrylic on the shine of the eyes to make them more real and so it looks like it has more life and realism to it.
Picture with flash cause I made this at night time:

It can be developed.
I've met people who improved in art making though it took extra time and effort it's possible.
For some who are truly exceptional it is talent, and sometimes it's passion and Interest. Art is just practice and mastery.
