Big Or Small. Why The Size Of Your Art (instrument) Matters!

in art •  7 years ago

When I saw the probably most famous painting in the world in Louvre (yes Da Vinci's Mona Lisa of course), I was disappointed by two things.

hanes eternity 3.jpg

Actually three. First was the amount of people crowded around it and pushing each other.

Second one was the fact that it was behind a protective glass (although I understand it).

And the third and most disappointing was.....the size.

Ladies get it right? Too small just doesn't work regardless the skill level!

With art it's very similar to "love" business (male side of it haha...), in my own humble opinion. Don't get me wrong, a cute little painting is like a cute little puppy. But I bet you will be more impressed by a galloping stallion or charging bear. Or a whale for the sake of comparison! :)

As far as I am concerned, the bigger the better. I LOVE PAINTING LARGE PAINTINGS. It's not easy because the larger you go the more difficult it gets in several ways.

  • First is the perspective. You have to step back to see what you're actually doing , taking into consideration the whole composition not only the small area that you're currently working on. With small painting you see it right in front of you. With an 8 x 6 painting you have to step back constantly.

  • Second is the practicality of the size- big canvas is harder to transport, store, and even sell because not everyone has space for an eight footer and also not everyone has enough money to buy a big piece (5 digits in case of my current pricelist, going into 6 soon). And obviously, if you're stretching and priming your canvases on your own, then good luck fella, you gotta have long and strong arms, cause it's no easy feat to pull it off. I dare say I'm pretty strong lad and even for me I get a serious workout out of it (see below priming process of an 8x6 feet canvas I built from scratch, including the frame myself).

  • Thirdly, it's another workout to paint a large piece! Do you know how many brush strokes of a painting like this one below needs before it's finished? Thousands! Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Explains why my shoulder is screwed haha :) Add to it constant climbing of stair to get to the top parts, and you don't need gym anymore :)

Of course there is many other reasons that I can't think of now, because my brain is fried after a very long day of all sorts of crypto operations:)

But.... AND THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT BUT....

would you rather be looking at something like this....

hanes new agora.jpg

OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS??....

hanes liberty 3.jpg

Yup, that's the same painting, once in 14 inch edition on the cover of New Agora magazine (thank you for the honor!) and the original 6 feet size!

I still paint small paintings, especially outside in summer, and also when I am too tired to paint a big one and I just need to relax with something easy. But if I can chose between small or large art, I'd go for large in any situation..

because....

size....

MATTERS! ....

What size of painting would you like to have in your house?
Or your future dreamed house?

I wanna paint 20 footers, that's clear!:-)

Thank you for reading, commenting, upvoting and all other kinds of love, even just a kind thought! :)

Much Love,

Jan

Heya! Your paintings are awesome as usual!
However, I do not think size always matters. "Why bother straining your brush if you can't reach hearts of others?" said one of our poet and a painter. Sorry if my interpretation sounds poor in English.
You can drink from an oversized glass of water to quench your thirst or you can drink from a small tea cup to do the same. It depends on the person, but the result is the same.
The artists main aim is to deliver the idea/message, feelings/emotions to people. Big canvas may require so much effort. Small pictures demand more attention to each little detail, I think. Each size have different approaches but those approaches do not define which size is better than the other. If an artist manages to enlighten people with a very small picture, I will say that he did a great job!

In the end, does boob and booty size really matter in sex?

I do not agree but I appreciate your comment. I am pro artist and I give art all I have, every single day. I sold hundreds of paintings worldwide and I did dozens of exhibitions. The pieces that always take the breath away of all people are the big ones. Of course you're right about one thing- they have to touch your heart, and that's not about size, but if you have 2 paintings that touch your heart and one is small and one is large, I am telling you everyone will be 10x more blown away by the large one. That's just my 2 decades worth of experience, but I respect you perceive it in a different way. As for boobs and booty- nah, but I was obviously referring to penis. Anything can really defend a small one? Mental stuff perhaps, but guess what, not in real experience :) Sorry for being bold. Love your comment and I am following you!

Nowadays, when we are shopping in malls, do we pay attention to phones with small screens or small TV's? We mostly look for phones with 5.0-6.5 inches screen or TV's with 50-70 inches screens. Why? Well, they are big, shiny and they support 4K, 8k and 16k! They cost fortune but we buy anyways. Must be some mental thingy we all have...
In art, I believe the first and foremost priority should be the message from the authors heart. It is up to the author to decide how to deliver it. Complaining about why Da Vinci didn't draw Mona Liza on 200cm x 150cm canvas is quite childish, at least for me. That picture may seem very small to you, but it's influence on world is tremendous! Small things matter! =)

Btw, I am from Mongolia. About 2 weeks ago I read your post about your trip in my country. I loved it! Following you since then! :D

I'm not complaining and you thinking that I'd be "complaining" about anything that one of the greatest masters of humanity ever produced is indeed childish from your side. It was said in a very joking way, as you might have noticed from my post about Mongolia, I do like to be sarcastic and humorous quite a bit. Written words' tone and intention are created in reader's head, not writer's, that's the downfall of written communication, which you certainly understand. I never said anything different that the message and if it's from the heart matters the most, it always obviously does, no need to repeat that. But it's simply something you can't deny and what I saw countless times in my years of art career is what I've already said: you put two heart pieces next to each other, one big and one small, and I will bet all I have on the fact that the big one will attract everyone infinitely more. If you prove me the opposite not by talking but by an actual experience (film it please), I'll pay you a ticket from Ulaanbaatar to Vancouver, business class, and invite you for a chic dinner ;) Mongolia is absolutely amazing country! Wanna go back and I will!

Loved your humorous and sarcastic pre-ending xD
Anyways, fair enough, I'll see what I can do =)

Interesting post professional photography

I've also heard the Mona Lisa is tiny as well! What gives!! Props to going big!

Wow!! you know what !! I read your article twice , yes it might be the language that is my second language but another thing is I like your art painting and for me all sizes have their own functions, position, etc .. my mother also paint and she like to paint big size .. when I look at her painting, i have more feeling i mean it is more impact to my feeling ...anyway, I am glad that I stop by and read you today... I hope to read from you more my name is T.J. Thai girl but I live in USA ... nice to meet you here and you have a good one :-)

Size matters...😂 😉. I love it. It does, sometimes.

This painting (clutching my heart) is stupendous. I just moved to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, for a variety of reasons, but one was to witness glorious sunrise and sunset scenes like that from my windows. Your rendition does the real thing justice and that’s not easy.
