This was a big project with many ingredients in it and lots of great insights. I am proud to present The Man, The Hiker. My artist friend Christin Björk helped a lot! I will probably share more tips from this painting but first I wanted to share the first and most important technical lesion. But check the painting first and further down I explain how to create depth..
There are some key ingredients in creating depth - the level of detail, the saturation, the value and the hue.
The further of you go into the distance you get the less:
saturated the colors get (there are exceptions )
the less contrast between the values
the less details you see
and most important the more blue you get in the colors - the cooler the colors get
These are the general rules and if you apply them you will create magic.
But the it does not stop there - the cool vs warm color can be used to create a 3D effect in all parts of the painting - If you look at the man in the painting you can see the parts closest - the foot and leg - are more red in the hue than the rest of the body. This is one example of how the warm colors will come towards the viewer and the cooler will reside.
And you can play with various other effects - such as painting blue in the shadows if you want want it to reside. Or add a little red in something you wish to pop forward. That is, you can use the color temperature to turn the form as it is called on fancy art language.
Prepare the colors you like in great amount not to run out while painting. I wanted to try out some pigments that granulate so I used Ultramarine blue and Burnt umber. Yellow ochre, Light red and Neutral tint was fillers.
