Do you want to draw a live portrait and come close to what the model actually look like? Then I will give you some great tips and guide you through one of my drawing procedures.

Sight size is a common measuring technique when drawing a model live. It was used by the old masters and many professional art schools teach this technique. It helps you to really see, measure and use your pen correct.

Sight size is a technique where you place the paper next to the model. Tape the paper to a board and place on an easel. When you stand approximately three meters away you should be able to picture the head on the paper - the exact same size as the models head. Use a big paper because the drawing will be the same size as an actual head.

So now comes the tricky but extremely rewarding procedure when it comes to learning how to see. You mark an exact spot on the floor. Three to four meters away should do. Then you look at the model and memorize where you want to draw a line or two on the paper. Then you walk to the paper and draw. When back on the marked spot again you look if the marks on the paper where correct. And then you continue until you are finished.

Yes! It is extremely time consuming in the beginning - but as you force yourself to step back and look at the overall picture and have to memorize the lines you want to draw - the method is fast in the long run. You will be able to see small subtleties and have a fast learning curve.

Is this not enough? Attend a professional art school for a year or dive into some cool websites such as https://www.sightsize.com/about.

In the next part I will go through, material, how to structure the drawing and extra tips.

I will open my new website - jwww.jnart.se on monday. Other channels to see my art via Instagram- usernamne: jnart.se or Facebook. Ask me if you want help or advice. If you want me to do a certain type of art, you are welcome to tell me.
